 School History

The 36th Street School originally was housed in a temporary building located at 2301 36th Street.  As the student population in the area continued to grow, construction was begun on a permanent building in l948.  The school building was completed in time for the opening of the 1949-50 school year.  In accordance with existing Lubbock Independent School Board policy, the school was not officially named until the completion of the permanent building.  The school, known as 36th Street School, was formally named P. F. Brown Elementary with the opening of the new building.  The school was dedicated March 24, 1949

The permanent building for P. F. Brown Elementary was designed by architect James Atcheson.  This original building contained twelve classrooms and had an area of 18, 675 square feet.  G & C Construction Company served as general contractors.  The total cost of the school was $202, 508.66. In 1950, six classrooms were added to the structure.  In 1956, seven classrooms, as well as, a library and a clinic space were added.  A gymnasium and air conditioning were provided as a part of the 1989 bond issue.  Two computer labs, six classrooms, a Counselor’s office and restrooms were added to the east side of the building during the 1996 school year.

     P. F. Brown, for whom the school was named, was the first teacher in Lubbock County to be paid from state funds.  His predecessor, Miss Minnie Tubbs, was paid by the contributions from the parents of her students.  In addition to teaching in various rural schools in the vicinity of Lubbock, Mr. Brown taught at Lubbock High School and also served as its principal.  He was also elected to serve two terms as the second Lubbock County Judge.  As a part of his duties as county judge, Mr. Brown served as ex-officio County Superintendent of Schools.  With the separation of the office of County Superintendent and County Judge, Mr. Brown chose to complete the term as County Superintendent. He served in that capacity until 1926.
