LISD Students Excel on SAT For Immediate Release September 2, 2008 (Lubbock) Lubbock ISD students in the class of 2008 scored higher on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) than state and national averages. Areas tested include critical reading, math and writing. More than 1.5 million students across the nation took the SAT, which measures skills essential for academic success in college. In critical reading, LISD students exceeded the state mean by more than 20 points. LISD’s 685 test-takers had a mean score of 509 as compared with 488 for the state and 502 for the nation. Mean scores for math were 518 for LISD students, 515 for the nation and 505 for Texas. A writing component was added to the test beginning with the class of 2006. At 499, LISD students scored well above the state mean of 480 and above the national mean of 494 on the writing portion of the test. In addition to exceeding state and national mean scores for the class of 2008, LISD students have scored above the state and nation in seven of the past eleven years. The number of Lubbock ISD minority students taking the SAT test continues to increase with 34 percent testing from the class of 2008, compared to 32 percent in 2007. The College Board reported that LISD African American students had a higher average mean score in both math and writing than the state and the nation.
