Creative Writing is an elective class that is a part of our fine arts emphasis. Students are involved in various reading and writing assignments including fiction and non-fiction narrative, poetry forms, and song lyrics. Students also submit their writing selections for publication in the Hutchinson literary magazine. The 2007 J. T. Hutchinson Literary Magazine, THE TRAIL, received a rating of "Excellent" in the Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines, which is sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
During the 2006-2007 school year, students in the Creative Writing class also had book reviews printed in the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. They also had poems selected for inclusion in an exhibit at the Asbury Gallery (First Friday Art Trail).
