Sample Scenarios


Students will investigate with the customs and practices of the Egyptian culture
You and your group are confidential advisors to the Pharaoh. As you know, in your culture the burial chamber and what is included in the chamber are very important for the afterlife. It is your responsibility to decide:
1) the interior design of the chamber,
2) the contents of the chamber,
3) how the body will be prepared for burial and
4) plans for the funeral and funeral procession.
You must present your plan to the pharaoh and justify everything included. Remember that the tomb and funeral are a reflection of his life and greatness.

Students will learn how to write a persuasive letter changing a city council policy
Prairie dogs are a protected animal but they are a nuisance to homeowners, farmers, golfers and dangerous to other animals. Write letter or present a multimedia presentation to the city council convincing them to regulate prairie dogs.

Students will persuade a representative of congress that the Internet should not be censored.
Congressmen are contemplating censoring the Internet because of all the fatalities that have occurred recently. What can you do to ensure that freedom of expression continues into the next millennium? Convince your local congressman to continue freedom of expression.

Students will know the processes, effects, and significance of nuclear fission and nuclear fusion.
  1. You are a landowner in Lubbock County. You have been approached by the Texas Energy Commission. They would like to build a nuclear power plant on your property and have offered you one million dollars for the property. You job is to convince the community that nuclear power is good for Lubbock. Begin with the basics of nuclear chemistry and how a nuclear reactor works. Address Chemistry TEKS 9. Discuss the benefits of nuclear power. You will give your presentation to the city council (our class). They will vote at the end of the presentation to approve or disapprove the construction of the new power plants.
  2. You live near Landowner A and are against the construction of a nuclear power plan. Your job is to convince the community that nuclear power is bad for Lubbock.

Students will investigate the processes that lead to the massive destruction of rainforests.
You have learned how the rainforest naturally will use the non-living elements of the rainforest to nature and redevelop the living elements. What would happen to the rainforest if more than the natural death of the living occurred? What are the various means of massive destruction of the rainforest? How much is being destroyed? How does this destruction effect you?
Mitsubishi cooperation is a major contributor to the destruction. What could you do to persuade them to stop? What other resources would you suggest for them to use?

Students will investigate life in the Middle Ages.
You wake up one morning and find that you are a cook for Sir Bob in the Middle Ages. You are informed that King Marvin will be traveling to Sir Bob's castle for a Christmas visit, and you are expected to plan a memorable feast. Your job is to plan a menu, provide the necessary utensils, and decide on the decorations for the hall.

Students will persuade the Disney Corporation that their chosen state is the best site for their next theme park.
Disney World is planning to build another theme park in the central United States. You are on a committee to help decide what state would be the best location for this park. Your committee will consist of four members and you will have a specific state to research. You need to base your recommendation of these 5 criteria: climate, population, economics, tourism and transportation. You will prepare a multimedia presentation convincing the Disney Executive Board that your location is the best. Community members will act as the Disney Board and listen to your presentation. They will each choose the best state based upon your presentation and provide feedback regarding the reasons for the decision. Each group will be evaluated by members of the class using a class-designed rubric.

Students will prepare a newspaper article informing the citizens of Lubbock about the Mexican free-tailed bat.
The people of Austin were really upset a few years ago! Why? Bats invaded their city! Thousands of bats! These bats set up house under the Congress Avenue Bride not very far from the capitol of Texas. Were they right to be worried? What were their major concerns? How were they convinced that bats were not harmful or dangerous?
Well, now it turn out a colony of bats is setting up residence right here in Lubbock! We need to gather information about the Mexican free-tailed bat to convince the citizens of Lubbock that these bats will be beneficial to all of us. The Lubbock Avalanche Journal is expecting a detailed report, complete with pictures, of these fascinating creatures. We only have six weeks to get information, make sure it's accurate and turn our report to the editor.

Students will learn about the life of early Texas Indian tribes and select samples of their lifestyle so future Texans will know of their existence.
It is the early days of Texas and you are a member of one of the Indian tribes. You realize that your tribe is about to be moved to a reservation. You know that one day a person interested in the people that lived in an area of Texas long ago will look for traces of an earlier civilization. You decide to leave artifacts in a container and bury it for them. What will you leave to let them know about your life. Leave 3 objects as examples. They can include pictures, art, clothing weapons, food, tools, pottery and habitat. Pretending that as an Indian of this tribe you can write in English, write a brief summary about your daily life.

Students will research the cost of insurance, maintenance and gasoline as they develop a budget to convince parents that they can support having a car.
You want the privilege of having your own car. Mom and Dad will buy you a car only if you can pay for insurance, maintenance and gas. You must present your parents with information about the job you will get, your income, the expenses for the car, other expenses you will have and other arguments that will persuade them to decide in your favor.

Students will study the Lubbock Lake Site and create a web page to share this heritage with the world.
Your class has been asked to create a timeline covering the times represented by the Lubbock Lake Site. You are asked to gather information on the recorded history of the site and significance. Develop a web page to display this information including text, pictures, film clips and audio files. This page will be used to share our heritage with the city and world.
