What is PBS?
Purpose
The purpose of the Lubbock Independent School District Positive Behavior Support Initiative is to establish safe and effective school environments that enhance academic achievement by improving student behavior. This is done by teaching and encouraging positive schoolwide behavioral expectations in a consistent manner. The Positive Behavior Support Initiative provides a framework for designing positive school environments where focus is on prevention. This creates schools where students are most likely to succeed.
How Is This Accomplished?
Safe and effective school environments are established through systemic, classroom and individualized strategies designed to address the various needs of students. A continuum of supports is designed to address:
- School-wide interventions to support all learners
- More specialized classroom and small-group interventions for students who are at-risk of failure due to social, emotional, behavioral or academic challenges
- Individual interventions for students with intensive challenges
Components of PBS
Each LISD campus has a decision making positive behavior support team that guides the campus in implementation of PBS. Goals of that team are to:
- Develop common approaches to discipline based on campus need
- Develop positively stated expectations for all students and staff
- Develop procedures for teaching these expectations to students,
- Develop a continuum of procedures for encouraging students to demonstrate the expectations
- Develop a continuum of procedures for discouraging rule-violating behavior
- Develop procedures for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the discipline system based on discipline data
