Welcome to the home page for Lubbock ISD's
Reading First Initiative. Take a look at What's New in our web.
LISD's Reading First Initiative website was created to demystify scientific,
research based information on reading for both teachers and parents.
Research
now provides guidance in developing effective reading programs for students.
What we know about reading instruction through research dates back to Chall's
review in the 1960's and culminates in the most recent findings of the National
Reading Panel Report in 2000. This website provides general information
on Lubbock's efforts to provide instruction using current research as well as
specific supports to schools and parents of students participating in the
project. We invite
you to visit the many resource links we have provided as well as the wealth of
information pages within.
To have all students reading on grade level by
grade 3 with explicit systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics,
fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension using engaging texts that capture and
interest students. To have highly qualified teachers that are knowledgeable in
how children learn to read, how to assess students' reading abilities and how
to provide different instructional strategies that meet the needs of each
individual student.
