History
Roscoe Wilson Elementary was constructed in 1939 as a grades 1-6
facility. It consisted of eight classrooms for 270 students. The
building was named in honor of Mr. Roscoe Wilson, an early attorney in
the city who served as a member of the Lubbock Charter Commission and
the Lubbock School Board prior to 1920.
Six
classrooms and a library were added to the original structure in 1942, a
cafeteria was added a short time later. In 1989, the building was
air-conditioned and a gymnasium was constructed. The latest building
expansion was completed in 1993 with the addition of a new library,
science lab, renovated office, and twelve classrooms.
Roscoe Wilson was designated a minority magnet campus in 1984 offering
Spanish, art, music, and CIMA instruction for identified gifted and
talented students. In the late 1980's Roscoe Wilson was designated a
learning styles magnet. In 1994, Roscoe Wilson was designated a
humanities/fine arts magnet. The emphasis was expanded in 1996 when the
campus added Core Knowledge curriculum to its magnet offerings.
