From
the School Nurse
In order to keep our
students healthy and safe, here are a few guidelines we need to go by
for the school year.
-
If your child is at home
and develops a fever of 100.0 or higher,
they will need to stay home
until they are fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing
medication such as Tylenol or Motrin. The will also need to
remain home if they have any vomiting or diarrhea. They need to be
free of vomiting and diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to
school. If they come to school and report that they have been ill
with fever, vomiting or diarrhea we will call you to take them home.
-
Medications at school:
Please make sure there is a prescription label on all prescription
medication
s including inhalers and medication for breathing
treatments. We cannot give a prescription medication at school
without the label, it is a state law. If you have a note from the
doctor with the student’s name, dose amount, frequency of
administration and name of medication, we can use that as the
prescription label.
- Over the Counter
Medications: If the medication is an over the counter
medication
such as cough medicine, Motrin, or cold medicine, it must
be appropriate for their age. In other words, if the instructions
are that it cannot be given under the age of 12 years without
consulting a doctor, we cannot give it a school.

- LISD policy states that we do not
give medication at school that can be given at home. If
instructions state that it is to be given three times a day, it can
be given before school, afte
r school and before bedtime.
-
If your child needs an inhaler at
school for asthma, please let me know if they are going to be
carrying it themselves. We still need a permission form signed by
the parent and the doctor.
Thank you for helping to keep our students
healthy and safe.
