My last year to teach at Sierra Middle School in Las Cruces, NM was a great experience. I realized that I had many experiences from Tucson and that most of the kids had never traveled much. So, we decided to take a trip and head west to Tucson! After discussing the idea with students so they could fully realize the work involved, we made our case to the Las Cruces ISD school board for special permission to travel out of the state. Permission was granted for 45 students to attend the field trip and the students began raising money. I assisted students with their fund raisers, but the majority of all efforts and work was completed by the students themselves. In the spring, students had raised the money for a tour bus. The only out of pocket expenses were $35 admission to various attractions, food and $2 per night to stay at the YMCA. What a deal! We visited Tombstone, the Biosphere II, the U of A Planetarium, the Sonora Desert Museum, a glass blowing factory, Golf and Things and the mall. What an experience for the students and four teachers leading the pack!
