NASA Explorer School

Being chosen to be a NASA Explorer School is a 3-year partnership with NASA benefitting families, students, educators/ administrators, and schools.

NES began in 2003 and now has 200 teams representing 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin NASA LogoIslands.

Two Dunbar teachers attended the Middle School Aerospace Scholars program a couple of summers ago and returned with information about the program.  They presented the opportunity to the principal and a team was formed.

Dunbar applied last year and actually made it into the final rounds of selection, but due to budget cuts and other defining criteria, we were not chosen.  “Failure is not an Option” and we reapplied this year.  It’s a competitive grant that is awarded each year.  Dunbar is 1 of 25 chosen for 2007.  We were 1 of 2 in the state of Texas, and the only middle school chosen this year.  Dr. Hesiquio Rodriguez Elementary in Harlingen, Texas is the other school chosen this year.

The grant is a three year commitment to provide NASA content, support, and resources into STEM-G areas and to address the needs of underserved and underrepresented communities.

The grant will provide opportunities for:

  • An intensive week long training workshop in the summer for the NES school team
  • Ongoing professional development throughout the school year for all staff
  • Access to NASA aerospace education specialists and other personnel
  • Student programs for hands on, inquiry based learning
  • Support and funds to purchase technology such as video conferencing equipment
  • Support in developing a family and community outreach program

The NES team consists of 5 Dunbar staff members.  They are:

  • Jimmy Moore, Principal
  • Malli Travis, Geography/Engineering
  • Vicki Bacon, Technology/Science
  • Sandi Davis, Science
  • Keri Pierce, Math
