Upcoming Events
Dunbar offers exciting science classes exclusive to our magnet program:
Forensic Science Institute
Students will learn a variety of Crime Science Investigation Techniques that are commonly used including: DNA analysis, fiber and chemical analysis, problem solving, hair and fiber testing, insects and crime scenes, observation skills and profiling, and various other investigative techniques. The course will culminate in the investigation of a mock crime scene where students will employ techniques learned and perform an "autopsy" on a frog to solve the crime mystery. (8th Grade – 1 semester)
Genetics and Genetic Engineering
Students will dive into the world of genetics and genetic engineering from DNA basics to biotechnology and genetic manipulation. Students will perform simple genetics experiments with plants, insects, and bacteria and investigate genetic engineering and its role on our future. (7th Grade – 1 semester)
Astronomy and Space Travel
Students will explore the world beyond our earth as we investigate the planets in the solar system, complete observational studies about the moon, identify the constellations and the constituents of the stars, and learn techniques for studying outer space through telescopes and star mapping. Students will have opportunities to collaborate with professors from Texas Tech University on class projects and to participate in viewing planets and star systems using the observatory at the university. (6th grade – 1 semester)
First Aid and Basic Healthcare
Students will learn basic first aid techniques including treatments for home emergencies, bandaging techniques, and basic CPR skills. Students will build a home or car emergency kit and will serve on the Dunbar First Response Team throughout the school year. The course will present various healthcare careers and will tie into the Medical Magnet at Estacado High School. (All grades – 1 semester)
Ecological Research and Scientific Research
Ecological Research and Scientific Research are two additional elective science courses students may choose from at Dunbar. Ecological Research is a one-year course for seventh grade students in Pre-AP science. This course is designed for advanced students to pursue in-depth studies of living things and their global environmental areas of concern. Scientific Research allows eighth grade students to use the techniques of scientific inquiry to design projects that involve exploring, investigating, decision making, and designing solutions. (7th/8th grade – 2 semesters)
Science Career Investigations
Students will be introduced to the multitude of high paying careers in the fields of science and technology. This course will feature teachers and professionals from fields such as pharmacology, medicine, nursing, wildlife biology, petrochemistry, engineering directly, and meteorology. Students will directly experience these careers through hands-on activities, mini-field trips, and guest speakers. (All grades – 2 semesters)
Archaeology and Anthropology
Students will develop an understanding of the history of this planet and its inhabitants. Students will learn the geological history of the Earth and the creatures that inhabit it, both living and extinct. Special attention will be paid to the anthropological and archaeological findings in the surrounding Lubbock area. (8th grade – 1 semester)
Science Excursions
Unique educational field trips are an integral part of the science curriculum at Dunbar and are truly multidisciplinary. Students not only experience science during the trips, but also study and visit areas of historical and political significance. Reading and math exercises are also included in printed field trip guides that each student receives and completes during the trips. The following excursions were taken during the 2006-2007 school year:
- Palo Duro Canyon State Park, TX
- Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge, TX
- Mescalero Sands/Roswell UFO Museum, NM
- Carlsbad Caverns National Park, NM
- Fluvanna Fossil Hunt, TX
- Midland Permian Basin Petroleum Museum, TX
- Dickens Springs County Park, TX
- McDonald Observatory/Chihuahuan Desert, TX
(Some trips are subject to change)
