GRACE PADLEY CHAPTER OF THE NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY LOCAL BYLAWS
I. The purpose of this chapter shall be to create an enthusiasm for superior scholarship, to develop citizenship, to stimulate a desire to serve, to promote leadership, and to instill exemplary qualities of character.
II. To be eligible for membership the following requirements must be met:
A. A student must be at Evans Middle School full time in seventh or eighth grade in the Spring semester and have a 3.75 or above grade point average for the first semester of the current year.
B. A student must not have had a U in citizenship or a discipline referral in any class.
III. Transfer members must meet the new chapter’s standards within one semester to retain membership.
IV. Membership will be terminated for a combination of any two of the following conditions or for a recurrence of one of the conditions:
A. A student does not make at least a 3.75 GPA for one grading period.
B. A student makes a U in citizenship in any class.
C. A student is placed in ISS or is involved in any other serious disciplinary matter.
A student who does not complete the 3 service credits per semester may have membership terminated.
(Loss of membership cannot be regained. However, the student can be eligible for membership in National Honor Society in high school.)
V. Service is a requirement of membership in NJHS. The national constitution stipulates that each member shall participate in service projects. All members will be required to earn 6 service credits by May 1st of the current school year. Members who best represent our chapter in the area of service will be recognized at the annual recognition assembly, and an outstanding member will be chosen to receive the “Striving for Excellence in Service” award. Any member who fails to meet the semester service credits requirement by the deadline set by the sponsors may be dismissed from the chapter.
VI. Newly inducted members will be required to earn 1 service credit for the Spring semester.
VII. Any member may not run for office for the eighth grade year if he/she was placed on probation at any time for any reason during his/her membership in NJHS. VIII. Dues will be required from each inductee in the amount of five dollars ($5.00). Dues are payable by induction date.
