Junior Historians is sponsored by the Texas State Historical Society. The purpose of Junior Historians is to promote active participation in learning about history. Students participate in field trips and in history research projects. Our chapter is named the Ernest Wallace Chapter* in honor of a long-time Texas Tech history professor. *Ernest Wallace was born in Daingerfield, Texas, in 1906. He earned his B.A. degree from East Texas State University, his M.A. from Texas Technological College (now Texas tech University), and his Ph. D. from the University of Texas (Austin). He began teaching history at Texas Tech in 1936. He became a Horn professor of History in 1967 and served as President of the Texas Historical Association in 1976. He wrote textbooks and history books including: Ranald S. Mackenzie on the Texas Frontier, The Comanches: Lords of the South Plains, and Texas The Lone Star State. He offered his assistance to area historical groups including the Junior Historian chapters. The Junior Historians chapter at J. T. Hutchinson Junior High School was organized in 1975 and named in his honor. Dr. Ernest Wallace died in Lubbock, Texas, in 1985. The Lonnie Wheeler Junior Historian Service Award
