Lubbock, Texas harbors a treasure in Iles Elementary School.  Established in 1978 as the first magnet school in the Lubbock Independent School District, Iles has remained a leader in its field.  This creative and expressive arts magnet school emphasizes the performing arts while insisting on high academic standards.  Students study the four core components of the fine arts while maintaining a rigorous academic schedule.  And while Iles students average 15-20 performances and exhibits per year, they rank “EXEMPLARY,” the highest rating granted by the Texas Education Agency.

Realizing the importance of community in education, Iles Elementary actively involves parents, family members, businesses, higher education, and community members as stakeholders in the school.  Programs such as the Crusader-Raider Club and Knight Readers organization, both in conjunction with Texas Tech University, emphasize academic achievement among all students.  Partnerships with organizations such as the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra and Ballet Lubbock expose children first-hand to the fine arts.

In addition, understanding multiculturalism remains a tradition at Iles.  For more than twenty-five years, Iles has developed programs and learning experiences relating to all cultures, culminating in a yearly Brotherhood celebration.  Also, the Iles International Awareness Team works regularly in partnership with the Breedlove Dehydration Plant to study and aid in world issues, increasing students’ awareness of the need to live as active global citizens.

And when the school day ends, the learning does not stop at Iles.  All students are invited to participate in a free Extended Day program featuring specialty classes in disciplines such as art, ballroom dancing, guitar, steel drum band, piano, organic gardening or sound engineering.  Programs are provided free of charge thanks to funding from a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant until 5:00 pm each day.

I like being here,” said Teddy, a third-grader at Iles.  “I like the fine arts and after-school programs.”

If I couldn’t go to school here,” remarked first-grader Azriel, “I would be very sad.”

This school has been honored with a Magnet Schools of America Schools of Distinction Merit Award, the Glenn Hendricks Magnet School of Merit Award, and was named as a 21st Century Schools of Distinction finalist.
