Great significance is placed on academics at Iles Elementary. Organizational structure at Iles is based on departmentalization, with an emphasis on vertical alignment between grade levels. Each academic area is under the supervision of a department head with intense training in each of the specific teaching strategies. Planning and instruction in the academic areas lean heavily toward a team approach, with an intense prescribed plan of instruction for each student. Iles Elementary is proud of its “Exemplary” status on the state-mandated Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). Recognizing the responsibility to meet the needs of all students, specialized instruction is provided for students who are gifted and talented, as well as those with physical, emotional, and social needs. Teachers who are specialized in each of these areas provide educational opportunities to maximize learning for each student’s needs. Gifted and talented students participate in such programs as Destination Imagination and Future Problem Solvers in addition to specialized instruction provided from teachers who are trained in this area. In addition, we boast an award-winning chess team. In addition, our special needs class at Iles is participating in a pilot program for utilizing assistive technology. These students collaborate with students from the general education population to interview and compile articles for the school newspaper.
