Information Fluency Lesson Plans (Grades 1-8)


The Information Fluency inititative is a joint effort of Lubbock ISD's Library Media Services and Instructional Technology Departments. It is an effort to provide teachers, librarians, and technologists resources to more effectively teach students to use information and technology.

First Grade

First Grade

  • Texas Symbols - Students become aware of the state bird, tree, and flower as they convince the governor not to change our state symbols.
  • Forming a New Government - If your class was stranded on a desert island, could a new government be formed? Students will learn about elected officials at the local, state and federal levels.
  • Technology and Life - Students discover the effects of life without electricity. They will create a book showing how it will affect their families' way of life, work and relaxation.
  • Weather Conditions - Students prepare a weather report giving current weather conditions and forecasts so the principal can plan activities.
  • Rules - Class rule books will be created after determining the need for good citizens and rules.
  • Water Conservation - Due to a water shortage, students will conduct a home survey and determine how each family can conserve water.

 

Second Grade

  • Presidental Time Machine - In the search for a qualified presidential candidate, a time machine helps students locate a former president for study of his qualifications, accomplishments and values.
  • Aquatic Animals - Students use letters and projects to convince the Science Spectrum to include the aquatic animal they have researched in an upcoming exhibit.

 

Third Grade

  • Saving Rainforests 1 - In order to help save the rainforest and a friend's way of life, students provide information and try to persuade to a state official to help.
  • Animal Books - To help younger students learn about rainforest animals, presentations or booklets are created. Eight categories of information about each animal will be collected.
  • Rainforest Trading Cards - Students create an illustrated rainforest animal trading card with information collected. Numerous rainforest websites are referenced.
  • Saving Rainforests 2 - The t-shirts and information cards created will share information gained about the importance of saving the rainforests.

 

Fourth Grade

  • Big Bend National Park - As a park ranger at Big Bend National Park, you must convince others that the unique ecosystem and scenic beauty of this area deserve to remain a national park.
  • Microgravity - As a NASA doctor, you will help determine the long term effects of microgravity on the human skeleton.

     

Fifth Grade

  • Civil War Diary - After discovering a 1864 diary, student attempt to learn what happened to a cadet at Virginia Military Institute in May and write journal entries for May 10-16.
  • Doppler Project - To prevent future airplane accident, students analyze the effects of wind and turbulence on airplane travel to convince the Federal Aviation Administration that Lubbock International Airport need wind tracking technology.

 

Sixth Grade

  • Antarctica - Students are asked by the United Nations to explore the possibility of creating an experimental colony in Antarctica to help alleviate world population problems.
  • Alternative Energy - After a power blackout, students demonstrate an alternative energy source to operate an entertainment device.
  • Tuck Everlasting - Students create a scrapbook covering the past fifty years to share with the Tuck family.

 

Seventh Grade

  • Texas Regions - Creation of a tourism booklets highlighting one of the twelve regions of Texas encourages students to learn about their region and a major city.
  • Texas Energy Sources - Renewable energy sources available to Texans are researched and compared.

 

Eighth Grade

  • Changing the Constitution - Students will consider changes in the U.S. Constitution for the new millennium as they enter a contest.
