Students enrolled in JJAEP are required to perform one day of community service a week (each Saturday), while they participate in the activity portion of the program. Lubbock offers plenty of possibilities for giving back to the community and various volunteer opportunities can be found with many agencies around town:

• Housing and Community Development: work at various community centers around town for ages 14 and up (will accept minor assault referrals). Ph.: 806-775-2678 (Angie Hobbs )

• Paws Animal Shelter: working with lost and found animals, adoptions, cleaning, for ages 16 and up (daily). Address: 401 N. Ash Ave. Ph: 806-775-2056 (Gary Quarles)

• Lubbock Lake Landmark State Historical Park: facility, grounds, and vehicle maintenance work for ages 15 and up (Wednesday – Friday). Address: 2200 N. Landmark Fwy. Ph.: 806-741-0306 (Johnny Crawford or Lupe Fernandez)

• Meals on Wheels: preparing food boxes for the needy, cleaning up around the facility, and performing clerical duties for ages 14 and up (will not accept any assault, theft, or drug related referrals). Address: 2304 34th St. Ph.: 806-792-7971 (Barbara Bulin)

• Salvation Army: sorting donated clothes and helping around the center for ages 15 and up (daily). Address: 2010 Clovis Rd. Ph.: 806-741-1325 (Monty Lamkin)

• Slaton: cleaning, painting, washing cars, and general maintenance (Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m.– 5:00 p.m.). Address: 175 N. 8th St. Ph.: 806-828-2020 (Ron McGlone)

• Turf Therapy and Therapeutic Riding Services (therapeutic riding clinic for disabled individuals): cleaning stalls, grooming horses, painting, working with clients and horses, general maintenance (Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. – 8 p.m.). • Ronald McDonald House: fixing and cleaning-up, office assistance, sorting clothes and food work for ages 10 and up (will accept minor assault referrals, ages 14 and under will require on-site parent supervision). Address: 1212 Indiana Ave. Ph.: 806-744-8877 (Maria Mackey)

• City of Lubbock Graffiti Removal: removing graffiti from buildings, walls, fences and other sites throughout the city for jr. high or high school-age students (weekends, school holidays, Monday – Friday in the summer, 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.; wear clothing you would use to paint in, no shorts or tank top shirts, must be at the shop by 7:30 a.m. ready to work and picked up at 3:30 p.m.; referrals needed from our department ASAP). In addition to other volunteer projects, JJAEP students are engaged in the construction of their own Freedom Park on the site of the former waste area attached to the school grounds. All students participate in all the stages of the project, including planning and design, landscaping, planting trees, paving walkways, etc. In this project, students are advised and directed by JJAEP teaches and counselors, STAR sergeants, and employees of the Tom’s Tree Place.
