Miss Minnie Tubbs opened the first Lubbock
School in 1891. The school was located on the southwest corner
of the block just east of what is now the city square. Then in
1892 P.F. Brown founded the second school in Lubbock. In 1898
the new school had a second room added making it a two room school.
After a fire in 1909 and the first building was destroyed, a
new school was built just south of the Burrus Elevator. Later
that year, bonds worth $25,000 were issued to build a brick building
with two stories and a basement where present-day city hall offices
are located. The current edifice was begun in 1930, and completed
in time the fall semester of 1931.
In 1970 there was talk of closing Lubbock
High as a result of low enrollment due to new school boundaries.
To solve the problem of low enrollment LEAP (Lubbock Exemplary
Academic Program) was developed; then in 1983 the
FRIDAY enrichment schedule (of which this home page is a product).
1982 was the 50th Anniversary at Lubbock High's current location
(2004 19th St. Lubbock, Texas). During the first fifty years,
the science and homemaking wing, East wing, and library among
many others have been added. In 1991, at a cost of 3.9 million
dollars, Lubbock High School was updated with central air conditioning
and heating.
Lubbock High School remains a national
leader in education. On February 8, 1996, Mrs. Mediano announced
over the loud speaker to students that she was on the phone with
the people from the Blue Ribbon committee and Lubbock High was
chosen as one of few schools nationally for the Blue Ribbon School
Award.
