Duke University Talent Search Seventh grade students compete for academic recognition by taking the SAT or ACT with high school seniors. Sponsored by Duke University, this activity provides beginning middle school students with the chance to participate in a nationwide search for talent.

 

Lubbock Mother Daughter Group- Caroline Ysasaga / Sponsor

Grade levels:   6th grade girls only

Description of organization: First generation college students

Begins: First week of school

Requirements:  Good grades and good citizenship. No one in the family has attended college.  Mother must be willing to make the time commitment.

Future Problem Solving6th, 7th, and 8th grade students  are eligible to become of part of a legacy of very successful Slaton Future Problem Solvers. Teams identify and formulate solutions for world problems that affect the present and have the potential to impact the future.
 

Destination Imagination – Karen Ray / Coordinator
Open to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.  Interested students form teams of 5-7 students.  Each team will have a parent coach and a teacher coach.  Teams choose the problem area that they wish to compete in.  DI promotes problem - solving abilities. Team members use their creativity to develop solutions to challenging ad interesting situations. Slaton’s DI teams are very successful in local, state, and world competitions.

 
 Dance TroupeMiranda Sharp -Director
Grade Levels involved:  7th & 8th
Description of organization:  A performance group that promotes dance to the community and other students. This organization will begin meeting in September. 
Requirements:  Students have to have had one year of dance at the Lomax Center before auditioning. 
Spirit SquadMrs. Fausset / Mrs. Hansard -Sponsor
Grade level: 8th

Description:  Exists to increase school spirit at the campus level.

Start date:   Must sign up with Mrs. Fausset during the first week of school.

Requirements:  Academics, overall average of 80 and have no grade lower than a 70 for any six weeks grading period.  Behavior: comply with the LISD Student Code of Conduct.  Attendance: Follow school requirements for attendance. Attend games and practices.       
National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Mrs. Youngs / Sponsor
Grade levels:  Only 8th grade is eligible, but eligibility is based on 6th and 7th grade grades

Description:  To create an enthusiasm for superior scholarship to stimulate a desire to serve to promote leadership and to instill exemplary qualities of character.

Requirements: 3.5 GPA for all semesters

Spanish ClubErnestine Cantu/Lindsey Fausset
Grade Levels:  Any student in Spanish I or Spanish II

Description of organization: Students will be encouraged to become Jr. Members of the Texas Tech Spanish Honors Society

Requirements:  Maintain a 75 overall average, attend club meetings, and participate in at least 2 community projects.

Youth for LeadershipMs. Crittenden / Sponsor

Grade Levels:  6-8

 Description:  An organization that involves students in community service projects.

When does it start:  Middle to end of September

Requirements:  Students must be successful in their academics and exhibit high character.

Student Council –  Ms. Hammond /Sponsor
Description:  Service organization committed to serving the entire student body. Students work to support the local community events by providing leadership, service, and monetary donations.

Requirements:  No six weeks grade below 70.  No semester below 80.  Satisfactory citizenship marks.

University Interscholastic League (UIL)–Mrs. Swindell and Mr. Meredith/ Sponsor

Grade Levels:  6-8

Description:  To grow and cultivate one's passion and knowledge in the fields of mathematics and science.

When does it start:  Practices will begin middle of September

Requirements:  3.0 GPA
