Math-
"From ages seven to thirteen, the area of the brain that supports logic, math and abstract reasoning- the parietal cortex, just above and behind the ears- is growing rapidly. Before age seven, there is very little growth in the region, so most kids won't be ready for complicated math until then. But between seven and puberty, it's important for children to learn those skills. Otherwise, higher math may become harder, although not impossible, to grasp."

Several teachers have asked for math ideas and resources I used while in the class room. I will try to list many of them here as copyright laws will allow. Most of them are from my made up lessons or adaptations of lessons I have "discovered". Enjoy!

All About Pi -  Don't forget to celebrate Pi day on March 14th at 1:59 pm (and 26 seconds if you want accuracy)

Brain Booster Questions - Something to get the kids thinking. I would often throw out questions like this or use them as bonus questions on tests.

Convert Numbers - how long is it? how much does it weigh? what's the volume?

Create a Graph - online, bar, line, pie, area or XY - all things you can do with Excel but sometimes online is easier.

Estimation - Drops of Water on a Penny -   How many drops of water will fit on a penny? (pdf file)

Estimation - How Far Does your Food Travel? - great estimation lesson to integrate with a science digestive system lesson. (pdf file)

Fractions - adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, simplifying

Graphing -  Ways to make simple graphs in the classroom. Don't forget to write questions about what you make? (pdf file)

How old are you? - Enter your birth date and see how old you are in months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds. And how long until your next birthday.

The (insert name) Review Game -  Editable PowerPoint games to help kids review (not just for math but other subjects as well)

Kay Toliver movies and activities -  Listed on the "Teacher books" page below, Kay Toliver is a math teacher who inspired me (and only through video). See 8 movie clips and download the 8 activities from a master math teacher.

Marble Mania - NEW -I used to have Mac software that would do this. Now you can find it on this website. Good for probability, theoretical and empirical data collection, graphing.

Mini-Metrics Olympics - From the AIMS education foundation. Great for estimation, measuring, metric system, and the Olympics! (pdf file)

The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives -  I used manipulatives all the time in class, but if you don't have access to any this is a pretty good substitute.

Online Multiplication Practice - pretty much says it all

Place Value Game - NEW - The Game is called WIPEOUT! Also good subtraction practice. (pdf file)

Problem Solving -  Stories that help with multi-step problem solving. (pdf file)

Roman Numeral Converter - So we know what year movies were made.

Teacher books that are better than the teacher's manual - Books no Math teacher should be without.

Using Literature in Math - some of my favorite "math" books and how I used them in the classroom.
