What is the purpose of the required technology competencies?

The purpose of the LISD Technology Competencies is to set a standard for technology skills that all LISD employees should attain to utilize technology effectively and to increase productivity. The competencies also serve as a system by which teachers can obtain a basic technology package for their classroom. By passing certain competencies, teachers become eligible to receive instructional technology.

How do other employees get technology?

All other employees will receive technology from special funds in their departments or on a regularly scheduled basis from Information Systems to comply with district standards. Any special requests should be forwarded to Terry Driscoll in Information Systems.

What if a teacher is a "floater?"

Still only one computer will be issued. That teacher will have to choose in which room the computer will be placed or the campus will have to purchase a cart if mobility is desired.

How often can a teacher apply for a new computer?

Teacher computers are only replaced based on availability of funds. There is no set timeline for their replacement.

What if a teacher receives equipment and then transfers to another campus?

Teacher computers will not be transfered. The room where the teacher is being transfered to will have a computer. Other technology items earned by the teacher will be transfered with the teacher as long as they are in the district. This does not include equipment purchased with other funds that are specifically tied to that campus (i.e. Title and Grants).

What if a teacher receives equipment and then leaves the district?

The equipment will be transferred to another teacher who has completed the appropriate competencies and is waiting for equipment. Preference would be given to teachers who qualify on that same campus. If no one on that campus qualifies, the equipment would be transferred to a teacher on another campus.

How does a campus get their computer lab upgraded?

Computer labs will be replaced on a consistent cycle, but the instructor(s) in the lab must have completed all fifteen required competencies and preferably well beyond.

What score is required to be considered to have passed a competency?
Computer based assessments require a score of 80% or higher.

If a person takes a competency assessment and scores 80% or above, do they have to take the course?
No. No one is required to take any course with the exception of the Legal/Policy class, One Computer Classroom (part A & B), and Information Fluency.

If someone fails the assessment, can they take the course or retake the assessment?
Yes, they can do either. They can always take a class that is being offered on their campus, and they can also retake any assessment as often as they wish. Courses, other than those required, are designed only to familiarize staff with the material for that competency. To get credit for the competency, they must pass the assessment.

If they take the course, do they have to take the assessment?
Yes. Courses are not required as a part of this program with the exception of the Legal/Policies class, One Computer Classroom, and Information Fluency. To get credit for any other competency they must pass the assessment for that competency. Often that is a computer-based assessment, but in some cases it may be some other project-type assessment.

Are all the courses six hours in length?
No, There is really no absolute time requirement for the courses taught on the campuses. There are limits to how many hours the technology department will pay for a given course. Also remember that courses are not required with the exception of the Legal/Policy, One Computer Classroom, and Information Fluency. The only thing you are required to do is pass the assessments.
