  • What if…you were alone at home during a tornado?
  • What if you were at the park…what would you do?
  • Do you know any tornado weather experts?
  • Would you like to be a WISE WEATHER WATCHER?

The Task

There are many new people moving into your city from other cities and other countries. The Mayor of the Windy City of the Southwest has requested your help to inform the newcomers of tornado safety procedures. She would like you to design a brochure that would explain how to be safe during a tornado. The Mayor would like for you to include rules and/or tips for safety at home, at school, outdoors, and while travelling in a vehicle.

Your brochure needs to be attractive and colorful. It needs to give accurate information about tornado safety. You may choose to make a computer generated brochure or you may choose to create it by hand.

 The Process

BEGIN HERE:

  1. First you will be assigned to a team of 3-5 students
  2. Search for the following:
      a.  tornado safety tips at school
      b.  tornado safety tips at home
      c.  tornado safety tips outdoors
      d.  tornado safety tips while riding in a vehicle
  3. View weather emergency posters to help you get ideas for your brochure
  4. Decide how your brochure needs to be arranged to include all of these safety tips.
  5. You may want to include warning and watch symbols and a map of your area.

  2. Does your brochure include home safety tips?
  3. Does your brochure include school safety tips?
  4. Does your brochure include outdoor safety tips?
  5. Does your brochure include vehicle safety tips?
  6. Is your brochure neat and attractive?
  7. Is your brochure well-organized?
  8. Is your brochure colorful?

Evaluation Document may be printed for student use.

Conclusion

With the information you have learned from your research you should have made an informative safety brochure on tornadoes.  There is no way to stop a tornado, but now you and others know where to go to be safe.  Being informed takes the panic away during an emergency even though you may be very frightened.
