After reading and learning about the inspirational story of Chris Nikic in English classes, Monterey High School had the opportunity to welcome the 21-year-old IRONMAN athlete with Down syndrome on their campus last week for a host of activities. Chris spent time with Monterey’s special education kids, challenged the Plainsmen football team to his 1% Better Challenge, spoke at an assembly, and also worked with the Plainsmen track and cross country teams.
Photo Gallery LHS One Act Play finishes as state second runner-up
Congratulations to all of the students and staff involved in Lubbock High Theater’s One Act Play as their performance of “The Unreturning” earned second runner-up in Class 5A at state last weekend! Lubbock High had two of the eight All-Star Cast honorees in Jeron Robinson and Nathaniel Coward, while McKenna Fransen received honorable mention All-Star Cast recognition.
Alumni Spotlight: Professional golfer J.J. Killeen
Coronado High School alum J.J. Killeen was featured in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram last week prior to the AT&T Byron Nelson, a Professional Golf Association (PGA) tour event in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Killeen was a Class 5A state medalist on Coronado’s state championship team in 2000 before winning four conference titles at TCU from 2001-05. Once considered a rising star in the sport, Killeen has struggled to maintain tour status much of the last decade, but played his way back into a PGA Tour event with a recent tournament win. It just so happens that the event he qualified for is the Byron Nelson, right in his old college stomping grounds.

The FFE Grant Committee, also around 20 members strong, is a hard-working group of community partners and volunteers. They meet eight times a year to review all teacher and student grant requests each month and award funds.
