Ella R. Iles

  • Ella R. Iles was the first permanent African American school teacher in Lubbock. She began her teaching career in a room at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church-Lubbock educating young African American students. Her class soon outgrew that room and, along with it, her impact on the community. Ella Iles Elementary School was founded in 1949 and named in her honor for her outstanding dedication to her students, which paved a way for future generations to come.
