The Margaret Talkington School for Young Women Leaders (SYWL) is a Lubbock ISD specialty school focusing on college preparatory academics, leadership development through community service, and health and wellness. Talkington opened in the fall of 2008 and serves grades 6-12 .
The Talkington SYWL is a member of the Young Women's Preparatory Network (YWPN), a non-profit organization that partners with public school districts to operate the largest network of all-girls’, public, college-preparatory schools in the nation. All YWPN schools feature a STEM-focused curriculum, and a majority of students are economically disadvantaged. The core values are college readiness, leadership and wellness life skills. In 2014-15, 146 graduates received more than $29 million in merit scholarships and grants and are attending 87 different colleges and universities. YWPN is located in Dallas, Texas and supports schools in Austin, Dallas, Ysleta, Fort Worth, Grand Prairie, Houston, Lubbock, and San Antonio.
All Talkington students have classroom access to laptop computers, while teachers integrate state-of-the-art technology tools into their instruction. Engaging elective and physical education courses and special interest clubs complete the curriculum.
With a full time college advisor on staff, all Talkington students participate in guidance and college preparatory lessons during their Student Advisory time. Talkington students have the opportunity to experience a challenging college-preparatory curriculum in a truly unique, single-gender learning environment.
