
McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Improvements Act is a federal law that was reauthorized in 2015 by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
McKinney-Vento eligible children/youth lack a residence that is:
- Fixed - Stationary, permanent, and not subject to change
- Regular - Predictable, routine, or consistent
- Adequate - Sufficient for physical and psychological needs typical in home environments
McKinney-Vento establishes the definition of homelessness for the purposes of:
- Identification of homeless students/unaccompanied youth
- Immediate access to public education
- School selection & enrollment
