Ms. Rachel Smith
Ms. Smith teaches astronomy and environmental systems. She is also the lead sponsor for Coronado's Girls in STEM club. Ms. Smith has taught at Coronado since August 2018.
Ms. Smith holds a B.S. in physics with a minor in mathematics from Texas Tech University. In December 2019 she will graduate with a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction, also from Texas Tech University. She was the first in her family to finish a college degree, and the first to hold a teaching certificate. However, she is far from the first teacher in her family; she thinks it's genetic!
Ms. Smith began to love science during her time as a student in Lubbock ISD, and had her first experiences as a teacher as part of extracurricular activities she was involved in. Most activities in class either directly or indirectly relate to science literacy; that is, understanding science-based communications from others and communicating scientific ideas to others. Such scientific literacy is an important skill for anyone living in today's society.
Before accepting this position at Coronado High School, Ms. Smith taught IPC at Lubbock High School as a long-term substitute from February to May 2018. While she was completing her undergraduate degree, she worked as a student assistant for the United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service-Cropping Systems Research Laboratory, and as a STEM Education Scholar for the Center for the Integration of STEM Education and Research at Texas Tech.
