Special Olympics Mission:
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Special Olympics is designed to give students with disabilities the opportunity to compete in sports with their same-age peers.
Special Olympics Texas is a year-round movement, holding more than 300 competitions annually on area, regional and state levels. Event divisions are based on age, gender and ability level to give athletes an equal chance to win. Each participant receives a medal or ribbon following their events.
The VTC participates in the following Special Olympics sports:
On February 29th, 2020, the boys and girls 5-on-5 teams represented the VTC in the Special Olympics Area 16 Basketball Competition in Amarillo, TX.
The boys team brought back a gold medal and the girls team brought back a silver medal!
Qualifications
In order to qualify to compete in a Special Olympics event athletes must:
be at least eight years old to compete.
have an intellectual disability.
have a medical release form signed by the doctor on file with your coach (linked here Medical Release Form)
