    McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Improvements Act is a federal law that was reauthorized in 2015 by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). 

    McKinney-Vento eligible children/youth lack a residence that is:

    • Fixed - Stationary, permanent, and not subject to change
    • Regular - Predictable, routine, or consistent 
    • Adequate - Sufficient for physical and psychological needs typical in home environments

    McKinney-Vento establishes the definition of homelessness for the purposes of:

    • Identification of homeless students/unaccompanied youth
    • Immediate access to public education
    • School selection & enrollment
