August 14, 2020: Back to School COVID-19 Resources
Dear Lubbock ISD families,

As we get ready to begin school on Monday, I want to thank you for being a part of our Lubbock ISD family. Through your feedback, as well as continued guidance from the State of Texas, the Texas Education Agency, and local health authorities, we are prepared to safely reopen our schools next week for the 2020-2021 school year.

Self-screening before coming to school will be an important part of protecting against the spread of COVID-19. A screening tool is attached to this message to help staff, parents/guardians, and students make the best decision when evaluating symptoms.

There have been many questions about how positive cases will be handled. Although each case will be different and handled on an individual basis, quick reference sheets about what you can expect from Lubbock ISD and your educational rights and responsibilities during COVID-19 are also attached.

August 4, 2020: Drive-Thru Registration and Deadline Information

Good evening Lubbock ISD families,

This is a reminder that tomorrow is the deadline for selecting face-to-face or virtual instruction on your student’s online registration form. If you haven’t made that selection or wish to make a change, families have until 7 p.m., tomorrow, Wednesday, August 5 to finalize their choice. You’ll find the option on screen 9 of the online registration form at www.LubbockISD.org/registration.

Students who do not have a selection after the deadline will be placed in face-to-face instruction. If you haven’t yet enrolled your student, we’ll be hosting a drive-thru registration event from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, August 5 in the north parking lot of Lubbock ISD Central Office at 18th St. and Ave. Q. Lubbock ISD clerks and support personnel will be on hand to help you through the process, and interpretation services will be provided for Spanish-speaking and deaf or hard of hearing parents, guardians, and students. You can also contact the help desk at 806-219-0190 with questions regarding registration.

August 3, 2020: Drive-Thru Registration Wednesday, August 5, 2020

Dear Lubbock ISD families,

The first day of school is just two weeks away! Although we know this year will be different than anything we’ve faced before, we’re committed to safely reopening Lubbock ISD schools for the 2020-2021 school year. Our families have the option of selecting in-person instruction with COVID-19 safety protocols in place or virtual/online school through the Lubbock ISD Virtual School.

If you haven’t yet completed registration for your students, please visit www.LubbockISD.org/registration.

To assist families who need help with registration, we’re hosting our first-ever Drive-Thru Registration event this Wednesday, August 5 from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. at Lubbock ISD Central Office on 18th St. and Ave. Q. This will be the last opportunity for families to select virtual learning. District staff will be available to help get your children registered for school, and we’re also providing free school supplies for the first 200 students registered!

The meetings will be conducted via Zoom and registration has been increased to a limit of 300 attendees for each session. July 20, 2020: Fall Learning Information All Lubbock ISD Families
Good evening, Lubbock ISD families,

We understand that our families and staff have many questions about returning to school for the fall semester. What will school look like in the fall? What are my child’s options? How is my child going to be kept safe? Through your feedback, as well as continued guidance from the State of Texas, the Texas Education Agency, and local health authorities, we are prepared to safely reopen Lubbock ISD schools for the 2020-2021 academic year.

Lubbock ISD families have the option of selecting in-person instruction with COVID-19 safety protocols in place or virtual/online school through Lubbock ISD Virtual School. Details were included in last week’s message, which can be found on our website for reference. We’re hosting two virtual information sessions this week for parents and guardians to hear about our plans and have the opportunity to submit questions. The meetings will be conducted via Zoom and registration is limited to 100 attendees for each session. If you would like to attend, please register in advance at the following links:
- Tuesday, July 21 at 6 p.m.
- Wednesday, July 22 at 2:30 p.m.
Please also take a minute to complete our short Fall Planning Survey. Your feedback is important to us as we continue planning for the upcoming school year. The survey will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22.

Detailed back-to-school information, including all communication messages during the COVID-19 pandemic, can be found at www.LubbockISD.org/backtoschool. To assist with back-to-school requirements, the City of Lubbock Health Department is offering free immunizations for children ages six months to 18 this weekend at no cost to families. They will be available in the Estacado High School gym and the Monterey High School cafeteria from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 25.

July 13, 2020: Fall Learning Options and Survey All Lubbock ISD Families
Good evening, Lubbock ISD families,

The fall semester will start on August 17 for all Lubbock ISD students and we are pleased to be able to offer two options when deciding how to attend. We are attempting to balance the needs of all our students and families and hope you will select an option that addresses your concerns about COVID-19 and your expectations for academic rigor.

As we continue planning for the upcoming school year, your feedback is important to us. Please review the details below and take a minute to complete our short Fall Planning Survey.

As you determine the most appropriate choice for your student and family, please consider the following information.

Face-to-Face Instruction
- Face-to-face instruction features the most robust support for students. Particular attention to health and safety will be addressed by multiple protocols, including:
- Microclosure procedures will be enacted for students/staff who come into “close contact” with a person who contracts COVID-19. A microclosure is a short shutdown between 1-5 days, during which deep cleaning procedures will be administered on the campus. During this microclosure, students will be taught online by their teachers.
- All Pre-K and kindergarten students will have an iPad to take home each day. All first- through 12th-grade students will have a Chromebook to take home each day.
- In order to limit the number of people in our school buildings, we are asking parents and guardians to remain outside of the building during dropoff and dismissal. We are currently making arrival and dismissal plans to ensure a safe and smooth transition at the beginning and end of the school days.
- Campuses are working on an appointment open house for our youngest students and families. You will also be able to make appointments to visit with teachers, counselors, and administrators as needed.
Virtual Instruction
- Virtual instruction will be provided to any student and family who prefers this learning option.
- Virtual instruction has a daily time requirement for students to be engaged in school work.
- Grading guidelines for virtual school will follow the same Lubbock ISD grading guidelines utilized for students enrolled in face-to-face instruction.
- Students who select virtual instruction will remain in the virtual classroom for a full nine-week grading period. For example, if families select virtual learning for their student, they cannot transition back to face-to-face until the grading period ends.
- A variety of educational platforms will be utilized for the virtual classroom including but not limited to Edgenuity, Google Classroom, Canvas, and Seesaw. Students will be required to navigate the platforms and submit assignments virtually through those platforms.
- Families of younger students will be expected to assist them to access the device, get started daily, and stay on task.
- Lubbock ISD is providing electronic devices.The State of Texas is working on a plan to provide internet access for families who need it. In the meantime, Park-N-Learn sites are available at all Lubbock ISD middle and high school campuses.
- Students who opt for virtual learning will receive instruction in core subjects. The decision to participate in UIL and extracurricular activities while they are enrolled in virtual instruction will be made by Lubbock ISD no later than July 31.
When you are ready to make your choice for either face-to-face or virtual instruction, please visit www.LubbockISD.org/registration and follow the steps below.
1. Login.
2. Select the name of your child or register if you are a new family.
3. Complete screens 1-10.
4. At the bottom of screen 10, select Face-to-Face or Virtual Instruction.
You are encouraged to make your selection as soon as possible so we can finalize our preparations for each type of learning. We encourage you to make that decision no later than July 20.

July 6, 2020: Summer School Information Lubbock ISD Families
Dear Lubbock ISD families,

We are excited to welcome students and staff to summer school beginning July 13 at 8 a.m.

Lubbock ISD is taking precautions to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff. These are the precautions we have instituted to safeguard against COVID-19 (coronavirus):
- All Lubbock ISD staff will wear facial coverings.
- All students are strongly encouraged to wear facial coverings. Students over the age of 10 will be required to wear facial coverings.
- Building and classroom door handles will be sanitized frequently.
- Student desks/chairs will be socially distanced in the classrooms.
- Students and staff will wash their hands for at least 20 seconds twice a day and use hand sanitizer between all classes.
- Hand sanitizing stations will be placed at the entrances and exits of classrooms and buildings and students will be asked to use hand sanitizer upon entering and exiting.
- Students will receive a locking plastic bag of supplies and will not share them.
- Desks/chairs will be sanitized between learning segments.
- School meals will be provided either in the classroom or in a sack lunch to prevent additional contact.
- Students will be health screened upon arrival.
- Students who are transported by bus will be socially distanced.

- Las butacas y escritorios serán desinfectados inmediatamente después de cada sesión.
- Para prevenir contacto adicional el alimento será proveído ya sea en el salón de clases o en una bolsa lonchera.

- Los estudiantes que viajen en camión acatarán distanciamiento social.

June 30, 2020: Important Meal and P-EBT Update
Good evening, Lubbock ISD families,

In partnership with our transportation and food service providers, we are fortunate to have had the ability to offer curbside pickup and school bus distribution of free meals for all children 18 and under during our school closure and throughout the month of June.

As of today, Tuesday, June 30, the first phase of our summer meal distribution is complete. Families visiting meal sites this week received double meals due to site closures the rest of this week as we begin our transition to summer school.

Meal service will restart on Monday, July 6 at the following eight curbside meal sites, with breakfast and lunch served from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., Monday - Thursday:
- Atkins Middle School
- Centennial Elementary School
- Ervin Elementary School
- Harwell Elementary School
- McWhorter Elementary School
- Monterey High School
- O.L. Slaton Middle School
- Wester Elementary School
Please note: Meal distribution on buses is discontinued due to the need for summer school student transportation and student meal needs. Any changes to the meal service schedule made due to updated health guidelines will be communicated by email, text, and posted on our website at www.LubbockISD.org/meals.

June 23, 2020: Update Returning to School 2020-2021 - All Lubbock ISD Families and Staff

Good evening, Lubbock ISD families,

I hope you are having a restful and healthful summer break, and are looking forward to the upcoming school year. As announced by Governor Abbott and Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath, Lubbock ISD will return to classroom instruction beginning on the first day of the fall semester on August 17. District administrators and principals are currently finalizing what campus instruction, services, and transportation will look like under the health and safety protocols established by the Texas Education Agency, the City of Lubbock Health Department, and Lubbock ISD. We are extremely sensitive to those of you who have concerns about returning to campuses if your student and/or family members have underlying health issues. I assure you accommodations will be made to serve the educational needs of every child whether in the classroom or remotely. Please watch for additional communication from me within the next two weeks detailing our re-entry plan.

With those assurances in mind, it is time for you to register your child for the 2020-2021 school year. Dear Lubbock ISD families,

We know you are concerned about “summer slide” and what you can do to support your child’s learning over the summer break. Summer slide is an educational term used to describe a decrease in learning that takes place over the summer when students aren’t engaged in school curriculum. Lubbock ISD has developed a digital playground for students in PK-12th grade. This online platform has daily activities for the entire summer to make learning fun. Be sure to have your child submit a Flipgrid to show off his/her learning for the opportunity to win prizes throughout the summer.

May 22, 2020: COVID-19 Grading and Report Card Update for Lubbock ISD Families
Dear Lubbock ISD families,

As we close out the 2019-20 school year we want to thank you for helping us reinforce Lubbock ISD’s mission to nurture, develop, and inspire every child, every day. Final report cards will be available on May 22, 2020. Please remember, due to our shift to online instruction, Lubbock ISD adopted a new grading system in an effort to be fair and consistent. Therefore, all remote learning grades are posted using the PIE system - Pass, Incomplete, or Exempt. Grading information can be found at www.LubbockISD.org under the “Gradebook” tab.

Pass (P): The student showcases progress toward accomplishing the content-specific daily/weekly activities.

Student is showing progress.
1. Student submits a demonstration of learning to the teacher according to activity specifications.
2. Student is making progress toward accomplishing the content. Some errors or thinking or misunderstanding of some elements may exist, but they do not impact overall learning of the target.
Incomplete (I)*: No progress toward accomplishing the learning provided in content-specific daily/weekly activities.

Student is not showing progress.
1. Student made little or no effort to complete work, after several contacts from the teacher.
2. Student’s overall work does not demonstrate learning according to activity or learning specifications.
Exempt (E)*: Student did not pick up a packet (PK-1), OR student did not login to start an online assignment due to lack of technology or home environment, or student did not complete and turn in any assignments each week due to limited technology or home environment, OR the student was not in the district due to other family members taking care of them.

*An E or an I on the report card requires a student in high school to do cycle or credit recovery for the core content missed. Elementary and middle school student makeup will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Dear Lubbock ISD family,

This afternoon, Governor Abbott stated that school facilities will remain closed for the remainder of the school year. We are disappointed that we will not be together this school year, but certainly understand his decision. The health and safety of our students and staff are our top priority. Remote learning, food distribution, and other services will continue through the scheduled end of the school year. We will continue to communicate with you regularly to provide updates. While the end of this school year will look different, we know we will finish strong. Thank you for holding true to our mission of nurturing, developing, and inspiring every child, every day - in every possible way.

April 16, 2020: Advanced Placement (AP) Exam Update Lubbock ISD Families
Dear Lubbock ISD AP students and families,

As we continue to navigate the impact of school closings related to the COVID-19 pandemic, I want to provide an update of what we know from College Board to all of you involved with Advanced Placement (AP) testing.

College Board has committed to maintaining AP testing despite school closures and is providing modified exams this year. All AP exams will be digitally delivered under these conditions:
- Students will be able to take the exam on any device they have access to (computer, smartphone, tablet, or Chromebook). They will be able to either type and upload their response or write responses by hand and submit a photo.
- Exams will be 45 minutes in length and consist of free response questions only (no multiple-choice questions), and will only include topics and skills that most AP teachers have already covered in class by early March to ensure the exams are fair to all students regardless of length of school closures.

- Most exams will consist of one or two free-response questions. Each question is timed separately, followed by a 5-minute upload time.
- Students will need to access the online testing system 30 minutes early for set up.
- Even though AP exams will be open book/open note, questions are designed in a manner that requires application of knowledge and skills and do not award points for responses that are easy to look up.
- Students taking AP world language and culture exams will complete two spoken tasks consistent with free-response questions three and four of the current AP exam. There will be no written responses for world language exams.
- 2-D Art and Design, 3-D Art and Design, Drawing, Research, Seminar and Computer Science Principles do not have a separate online exam and will require a digital portfolio submission by May 26, 2020, 10:59 PM CDT.
- Exams can be taken at home or in school if schools are reopened.
- Students who do not have technology access can complete the form at cb.org/tech to request support.

Exams will be administered beginning May 11 through May 22 (the schedule is attached). Each subject’s exam will be taken on the same day at the same time worldwide according to the attached schedule. Make-up exams are offered beginning June 1 through June 5 if a student has a conflict or experiences technical issues during the primary exam window. We strongly encourage you to take the exam during the normal time since there will be no additional opportunities to take the AP Exam after the makeup testing dates. College Board will communicate information to students on how to access the testing system via registered email by late April and provide a video demonstration so students can familiarize themselves with the testing system prior to their exam window. To ensure that you receive information about testing from College Board, please verify that your email information is accurate in your College Board account. For information on how to verify this information, visit https://pages.collegeboard.org/account-help/how-do-i-update-my-personal-information-email-address. If you are still unable to update your email address, please contact your teacher or campus AP Testing Coordinator for assistance.

Lubbock ISD encourages all students who have registered for the exam to maintain the exam registration and take the exam as scheduled. If your student has already registered for the exam, no additional action is necessary aside from verifying your email address in your student's College Board account. If you have questions regarding canceling your exam, please consult with your student’s AP teacher. Following that consultation, if you feel it is in your student’s best interest to cancel their registration, your teacher can provide more information.

Please note that College Board takes exam security very seriously. While the exam is open book/open note, students may not consult others during the testing period (digitally or in person). College Board has implemented numerous systems to maintain the integrity of each exam administration (including verification of identity when accessing the exam and tools to detect plagiarism). This year, your AP teacher will be sent a copy of your submissions so they can review your work. The consequences of students trying to gain an unfair advantage during an exam are severe. They include cancellation of scores, notification to the student’s school, and notification to colleges and other organizations to which the student has sent any College Board score (including SAT scores) or to which the student sends scores in the future. April 9, 2020: COVID-19 Grading and Report Card Update for Lubbock ISD Families
Dear Lubbock ISD families,

Although we prefer teaching and learning in a classroom setting, the work you and your student are doing at home is phenomenal. As we refine remote instruction, we are learning how to make this process more meaningful and workable for all concerned.

Under the 2019-2020 academic calendar, we have just completed the fifth six-weeks learning period. Normally, you would be notified of your student’s progress in a report card. But due to COVID-19, on March 30, Lubbock ISD shifted to a new grading system in an effort to be fair and consistent during remote learning. Therefore, all remote learning grades are identified using the PIE system - Pass, Incomplete, or Exempt (see chart below).

Lubbock ISD intended to send paper report cards home this six-weeks period, but in order to comply with federal guidelines and limit the spread of the virus, we are using the Lubbock ISD website for gradebook access. Grading information can be found at www.LubbockISD.org under the “Gradebook” tab.

Pass (P): The student showcases progress toward accomplishing the content-specific daily/weekly activities.

Student is showing progress.
1. Student submits a demonstration of learning to the teacher according to activity specifications.
2. Student is making progress toward accomplishing the content. Some errors or thinking or misunderstanding of some elements may exist, but they do not impact overall learning of the target.
Incomplete (I)*: No progress toward accomplishing the learning provided in content-specific daily/weekly activities.

Student is not showing progress.
1. Student made little or no effort to complete work, after several contacts from the teacher.
2. Student’s overall work does not demonstrate learning according to activity or learning specifications.
Exempt (E)*: Student did not pick up packet (PK-1), OR student did not login to start an online assignment due to lack of technology due to lack of technology or home environment, or student did not complete and turn in any assignments each week due to limited technology or home environment, OR the student was not in the district due to other family members taking care of them.

*An E or an I on the report card requires a student in high school to do cycle or credit recovery for the core content missed. Elementary and Middle School student makeup will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Lubbock ISD board approves TTUHSC childcare addition

At this morning’s special called teleconference meeting of the Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees, an additional memorandum of understanding (MOU) was approved to provide childcare for employees of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC).

Accomodations for the new students will be at Miller Elementary School, where University Medical Center’s (UMC) child care center is already in operation. Lubbock ISD and UMC began operating the center on March 30 under a similar MOU. The district also began staffing a child care center for employees of Covenant Health on April 1 at Ramirez Elementary School.

The childcare programs provide breakfast and lunch through Lubbock ISD, Aramark Corporation, and Durham Transportation’s COVID-19 meals program. Strict protocols are in place to promote social distancing. Everyone entering the school has their temperature taken before they are allowed access and only approved childcare providers are allowed inside the building. No more than eight children and two adults are in a room to ensure compliance with social distancing requirements.

April 3, 2020: Help Fight COVID-19 with Handwashing

Dear Lubbock ISD families,

You hear it all the time during flu season: wash your hands to prevent the spread of flu. You may have heard advice encouraging you to do the same to stop the spread of COVID-19. But do you know why this simple practice works so effectively? Washing your hands with soap and water breaks up the molecules of the virus and washes them away, preventing the virus from infecting you or others.

To be able to effectively and reliably break up the virus cells, you must wash your hands thoroughly and vigorously for at least 20 seconds. Doing this can be incredibly effective! In fact, a study showed that when a group of elementary aged school children participated in supervised handwashing 2-4 times per day, the spread of a similar virus was reduced by 47 percent.

While it is important to wash your hands, it is also important that we all regularly disinfect surfaces.

COVID-19 has been shown to live for up to three days on various surfaces. If you must leave your home for essential services, be sure to wash your hands as soon as you return and disinfect any surfaces you may have touched. If someone in your home is ill, it’s also important to regularly disinfect. Applying soap and water plus commonly used disinfectants to frequently touched surfaces will break up the virus and carry it away, in the same way soap kills and carries away the virus on your hands.

April 3, 2020: COVID-19 Grading Policy Update

Dear Lubbock ISD families,

These are especially uncertain times. We know that even when educational routines are normal, GPA and class rank can cause stress for both students and parents. The current situation, with the fifth and sixth six-week grading periods in limbo due to our school closures, is raising that stress to unprecedented levels. Lubbock ISD administration wants to reassure you it is adopting policies and applying procedures in a fair, consistent, and equitable manner for all students.

GPA Calculation for High School Credit on Transcript

For transcript purposes, GPA calculations will cease effective the end of the fourth six weeks.

Numerical grades for any student taking high school credit for transcript purposes will be calculated as follows: the first semester grade will stand as recorded. The second semester grade will be determined by averaging the first, second, third, and fourth six weeks grades. Put another way, the second semester grade will be computed using this calculation: (first six weeks + second six weeks + third six weeks + fourth six weeks)/4 = second semester grade on the transcript. Online courses taken for advancement through Lubbock ISD online will be included.

TEAMS Gradebook not accessible

Many families and students are asking why the TEAMS/Gradebook is currently not accessible. Academic performance for the fifth six-week grading period will be based on completion of student work assigned from March 30 forward. Grading “make-up” work for work assigned before spring break would be inequitable to some students due to uneven internet access.

Therefore, Lubbock ISD closed access to TEAMS/Gradebook, and it will no longer be accessible. As you have been informed by prior communication, there are only three grades which will be assigned for online work: P for Pass, I for Incomplete, and E for Exempt.

During our school closures, Lubbock ISD teachers will keep a spreadsheet for student grades rather than utilizing the TEAMS/Gradebook. Communication to families regarding missing work during the COVID-19 online learning period will come through Google Classroom.

Communication to families regarding fifth six weeks grades will be sent via letter on April 9, 2020, reporting student grades for each course of enrollment.

We know grades are important to our families and students. You also have an expectation that Lubbock ISD will maximize student learning while keeping consistent, fair, and objective grading during our students online learning experience.

Thank you for your support of Lubbock ISD, especially right now. We would much prefer calculating GPA and class rank in the traditional and time-tested manner, but are confident that this is the best method to make these determinations in a way that is equitable to all concerned.

Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees approves agreement for Covenant Health employee childcare

Lubbock Independent School District trustees have executed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Covenant Health System to provide childcare for its employees through April 15 due to the COVID-19 medical emergency. The agreement will be reviewed for possible extension.

Beginning April 1, Lubbock ISD paraprofessionals and employees of Covenant Health will staff a childcare center at Ramirez Elementary School. The center will be staffed between 6:30 am - 6 pm, Monday through Friday. Covenant Health estimates that 145 children, between the ages of 4-14, will be served

Lubbock ISD and University Medical Center (UMC) began operating a childcare center for UMC employees on March 30 under a similar MOU at Miller Elementary School. Miller is serving about 50 children per day and will remain in operation until schools are reopened. UMC estimates that 170 children, between the ages of 4-14, will be served in total.

The childcare programs provide breakfast and lunch through Lubbock ISD, Aramark Corporation, and Durham Transportation’s COVID-19 meals program. Strict protocols are in place to promote social distancing. Everyone entering the school has their temperature taken before they are allowed access and only approved childcare providers are allowed inside the building. No more than eight children and two adults will be in a room to ensure compliance with social distancing requirements.

The childcare operations are being administered by Kevin Booe, principal at Miller Elementary School, and Melissa Hernandez, principal at Ramirez Elementary School.

“We understand the importance of our school closure as part of the statewide strategy to slow the spread of COVID-19, but we also feel strongly about supporting the families of our local healthcare workforce as they work tirelessly to care for those in our community who need it the most, “ said Superintendent Dr. Kathy Rollo.

Walt Cathey, Covenant Health CEO for the Lubbock region, said, “We appreciate Lubbock ISD stepping up to fill a need in our community. We need our frontline caregivers focused at work and they can do that now with peace of mind that their children are well taken care of.”

UMC CEO Mark Funderburk added, “UMC is grateful for the support of our community and our friends at Lubbock ISD. We know these times are difficult for our staff, especially those who have children that aren’t in school right now. Because of this partnership, we are able to offer much needed childcare.”

March 31, 2020: COVID-19 Update Lubbock ISD Families and Staff

Dear Lubbock ISD family;

The trustees and I are humbled by the perseverance, resilience, and positive attitude the students, families, and staff of Lubbock ISD have exhibited during the COVID-19 pandemic. We have all been tested like never before and have adapted with grace and flexibility. All of you are trying your best under less than ideal circumstances and are looking forward to the day that schools reopen. Unfortunately, that is not going to happen at the beginning of next week.

Lubbock ISD will remain closed at least until May 4. This means schools will remain closed, but instruction through remote learning and all the services we are currently providing, will continue. I must emphasize this decision is based on the extended closure order by Governor Abbott and President Trump’s social distancing guidelines in effect through the month of April. It adheres to the protective measures enacted by Mayor Pope, the City of Lubbock, and guidance from the City of Lubbock Health Department.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has outlined the need for all communities to rigorously adhere to the social distancing protocol. I want to reiterate a request to our school community to take the following precautions to prevent the spread of the illness:

Don’t shake hands.
Wash your hands regularly and thoroughly.
Limit movement within the community, especially avoiding crowded places and maintaining six feet of distance between people.
If you suspect you have symptoms of COVID-19, please contact your health care provider for medical advice.
Do not leave the house if you are ill. Even when healthy, please comply with the City of Lubbock’s stay-at-home order.
Our curbside sites and bus routes will continue meal distribution during the extended closure. Updated information about meal service and other resources can always be found at www.LubbockISD.org/ healthupdates

I hope this gives students, family, and staff the opportunity to plan effectively for the next four weeks. Much has been asked of all of us during the past several weeks. Now I ask that you continue to do your best during these unprecedented circumstances. March 27, 2020: Daycare for Hospitals

The Lubbock Independent School District, in collaboration with the two largest health systems in our region, will begin providing childcare next week for healthcare workers due to the COVID-19 medical emergency.

Lubbock ISD and University Medical Center have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to provide this service. Beginning March 30, Lubbock ISD paraprofessionals and employees of UMC will staff a childcare center at Miller Elementary School for the employees of UMC. The center will be staffed between 6:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, until the schools are reopened by the Texas Education Agency and Governor Greg Abbott. UMC estimates that 170 children, between the ages of 4-14, will be served.

The Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees will meet for a special teleconference meeting on March 30 to consider a similar MOU with Covenant Health. Plans are in process to offer childcare services to the employees of Covenant Health at Ramirez Elementary School beginning April 1. Services will be provided by Lubbock ISD paraprofessionals and Covenant employees between 6:30 a.m. - 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, under the same protocol. Covenant Health estimates that 145 children, between the ages of 4-14, will be served.

Updates on Advanced Courses related to School Closures/Transition to Distance Learning

The following information is being communicated to districts for advanced courses in high schools by various district partners (including Advanced Placement, Dual Credit and OnRamps) due to school closures and transition to online/distance learning as a result of COVID-19. This is what we currently know. We will provide updates as they become available.

SPC Dual Credit - Last updated 3/19/2020

South Plains College (SPC) has made the decision to postpone all dual credit courses until Monday, March 30. All online, face-to-face, ITV and CTE dual credit courses have been delayed a week to accommodate the extended spring breaks of high school partners.

Students are expected to continue their dual credit coursework on Monday, March 30. Students enrolled in face-to-face classes will receive instruction through Lubbock ISD’s distance learning model in which all teachers are currently receiving training.

All online dual credit courses will resume Monday, March 30. All dual credit courses which were not initially online at the beginning of the semester will shift to an online format (including all ITV courses). All SPC CTE courses will be shifted online - students need to check Blackboard by the end of this week for updates from instructors. SPC administrators will revisit the schedule on April 6 and make additional decisions at that time.

UT/TTU OnRamps - Last updated 3/19/2020

OnRamps partners are committed to the following goals for student learning:
- To ensure students continue to have access and remain engaged in high-quality course experiences aligned with college expectations.
- To support students and teachers in transitioning the high school course experience to distance teaching and learning.
- To establish a clear path for students to earn college credit despite varied circumstances.
As such, OnRamps will provide the following due to closures/distance learning caused by COVID-19.
- The college portion of the course will be delivered through online instruction.
- College instructors will coordinate instruction and support through email communication (at least weekly) to students and commit to responding to student communication within two (2) business days.
- Instructors will provide activities, classwork, homework, and assignments focused on stimulating student involvement and encouraging critical thinking.
- Instructors will maintain online office hours through OnRamps support. OnRamps will host group chats or synchronous class sessions (as required).
- OnRamps will provide support to the high school teacher.
- Online features will include:
- Provide guidance to high school teachers on hands-on experiences for lab based courses (such as Physics)
OnRamps is evaluating the best way to complete finals and will communicate more information on April 6.

Lubbock ISD staff will conduct distance learning opportunities for students through Lubbock ISD distance learning model.

Advanced Placement - Last updated 3/20/2020

Lubbock ISD will continue providing student instruction through Lubbock ISD’s distance learning model beginning March 30. Teachers are currently receiving training.

For additional support, the College Board (CB) is providing live and on-demand AP courses at no cost. CB is also developing at-home testing options and providing two separate testing dates for each AP subject. The full schedule will be posted by April 3.

Resources will be available at no cost for students through the exam day to assist their preparations.
- CB is developing secure 45-minute online free-response exams for each course.
- The exam content will focus on what most schools were able to complete by early March.
- You’ll be able to take exams on any device such as computer, tablet, or smartphone. You’ll also have the option to write responses by hand and submit a photo.
- Colleges support this solution and are committed to ensuring that AP students receive the credit they have worked to earn. For decades, colleges have accepted a shortened AP Exam for college credit when groups of students have experienced emergencies.
- CB realizes that not all students have access to the internet or a device. CB is working on solutions to help students get what they need to show their best work.
- While Lubbock ISD encourages all students who registered for the exam, CB has stated that any student not wanting to take the AP Exam may cancel at no charge.
Additionally, beginning March 25, CB is offering students live AP review courses delivered by AP teachers from across the country at no cost.
- Courses are optional, mobile-friendly, and can be used alongside any work your teacher may give you.
- Will be available on-demand, so you can access them any time.
- Will focus on reviewing the skills and concepts from the initial 75% of the course. There will also be some supplementary lessons covering the remaining 25% of the course
- CB is providing updates on Advanced Placement courses and testing, including course specific AP Exam information, at the following link:

The following is a summary of the International Baccalaureate Organization’s (IBO) actions relating to students affected by school closures/ transition to distance learning.
- The IBO will be taking the following actions for the May 2020 examination session:
- Extension of several deadlines for schools closed two weeks or more
- Delay of required large group events (such as exhibitions and performances)
- Provide guidance to faculty on digital instruction

March 25, 2020: Online Learning Update 2nd-12th Lubbock ISD Families
Dear Lubbock ISD families,

I believe the best phrase I have heard this last week is “buckets of grace,” which is greatly needed and appreciated as we tackle something we have never done before. I am honored to serve in a district where teachers, administrators and staff have banded together under one passion: to serve your child.

As we continue this extended spring break and prepare to initiate remote instruction, here are a few recommendations to think about.

What should you be doing right now to prepare for online learning?

Log on to www.LubbockISD.org/learnonline and click the Parent tab, then click your student’s grade level. There is a list of resources and ideas for activities to do at home to begin extended learning. Remember, many of these activities can be repeated everyday, such as reading a good book, writing a letter, or practicing math skills. Also, check out Lubbock ISD-TV. Some of our Central Office staffers are reading books, then asking questions about what was in the story.

If you have a student receiving services in a specialized program, please click on Special Education. There are also additional resources for students receiving special services such as Resource/Inclusion, Bilingual/ESL and Dyslexia available under the Special Services links.

What you should do during the week of March 30-April 3 to participate in online learning from home?
1. Help your student prepare their Chromebook for remote instruction. Make sure it is charged, and they remember how to login.
2. Most students have the following setup for their Google accounts and emails. If your student has a problem with access, call the help desk at 219-0199.
3. Teachers will provide daily support with learning videos, activities, and assignments.
4. Remind your student that campus administrators will be reviewing their learning activity on Chromebooks.
5. Your student will receive daily lessons in core subjects and one to three lessons from elective teachers depending on age and grade. Specialized programs and special education teachers will provide support specifically tailored for your students needs.
What about grades?

Teachers will use grades as a tool for communication only. They will not be reported on formal report cards. Grades will consist of pass (the student completed the work successfully), exempt (the student is unable to complete the work), or incomplete (the student has not yet finished the work and it is still in progress). Teachers will give a minimum of one grade per week based on their work in Google Classroom. If access to technology and/or lack of viable communication from the home environment are barriers, teachers have been instructed to issue an E for Exempt. GPA and rank calculations will be shared at a later date.

Dear Lubbock ISD families,

I believe the best phrase I have heard this last week is “buckets of grace,” which is greatly needed and appreciated as we tackle something we have never done before. I am honored to serve in a district where teachers, administrators, and staff have banded together under one passion: to serve your child.

As we continue this extended spring break and prepare to initiate remote instruction, here are a few recommendations to think about.

What could your schedule look like?

What you should do during the week of March 30-April 3 to participate in online learning from home?

There are two options for prekindergarten, kindergarten, and first-grade parents to participate in online learning from home:
1. If you have access to email, See Saw or Bloomz, you will continue to get communications from your child’s teacher. She/he will send you activities/assignments you can complete with your child.
2. If you do not have access to email, See Saw or Bloomz, you can pick up a packet of activities created by Central Office staff at one of the meal site locations or from the bus routes delivering food. These packets will also be posted online at www.LubbockISD.org/learnonline under the Parent tab and your child’s grade level.

March 24, 2020: Pre-K Update

Dear Lubbock ISD prekindergarten families:

We hope you have been able to make this a time of enrichment for your young child. This is such an uncertain time and can be frightening for children and families who are out of their routines and rattled by COVID-19’s overwhelming atmosphere.

But we know children are so resilient. We heard a five-year old was asked if he knew why the schools were closed. He replied, “Because they’re out of toilet paper!” That’s the spirit.

Many of you are asking about reimbursements for prekindergarten tuition paid in March or for the semester. We are working to determine if we can get those reimbursements for the week of March 23-27 and March 30-April 3. Even though we will be providing pre-K instruction and resources remotely through our meal distribution sites and on several school bus routes, you will not be charged for any days that campuses are closed going forward.

Please check the Lubbock ISD website, www.LubbockISD.org/healthupdates for the latest information on COVID-19 and the resources we are providing. You’ll find instructional resources specifically geared to pre-K students at www.LubbockISD.org/learnonline. Kindergarten registration is currently underway for the 2020-2021 school year online at www.LubbockISD.org and pre-K registration online begins April 1. If you know of a family with a child who will be a kindergarten or prekindergarten student in the upcoming school year, please remind them of these registrations.

Lubbock ISD adapts educational services in light of school closures

The Lubbock ISD family has quickly developed plans to continue supporting the more 27,000 students and families who call our campuses home.

Plans were in place to prepare for remote instruction before Governor Abbott’s announcement this week made closure official. All students in second- through 12th-grade were assigned a Chromebook to take home before spring break. The Lubbock ISD Curriculum and Instruction team, in partnership with Technology Services, has developed resources and lessons housed at www.LubbockISD.org/learnonline to be used in conjunction with the many digital tools students regularly use in the classroom. Teachers will spend next week in professional development to learn more about best practices for delivering instruction in this unique environment. Special Services staff is also preparing for adapted delivery of support services while students are at home.

In partnership with our transportation and food service providers, we are fortunate to have the ability to offer curbside pickup and school bus distribution of free meals for all children 18 and under during our school closure.

Beginning Monday, March 23, curbside pickup will be available at 16 Lubbock ISD campuses Monday through Friday, from 12 - 1:30 p.m..

School bus meal distribution will also begin on Monday, March 23, with 20 buses delivering food across the city of Lubbock. Routes will begin at 12 p.m. and run until 1:30 p.m. in order of their regular stops. The bus numbers have not changed from their regular routes, so students who normally ride the bus will be familiar with the bus numbers.

An interactive map is included on our website at www.LubbockISD.org/ healthupdates for all families to view the campus and school bus distribution sites near their location. Families and members of the Lubbock community are encouraged to visit www.LubbockISD.org for all updated information related to school closure.

March 20, 2020: Meal Information All Lubbock ISD Families
Dear Lubbock ISD families,

In partnership with our transportation and food service providers, we are fortunate to have the ability to offer curbside pickup and school bus distribution of free meals for all children 18 and under during our school closure.

Beginning Monday, March 23, curbside pickup will be available at 16 Lubbock ISD campuses Monday through Friday, from 12 - 1:30 p.m. A few important guidelines to note:
- Children must be present to pick up meals.
- School buildings will not be open.
- Only grab-and-go options will be available.
- Lunch and the next day’s breakfast will be distributed each day.
- Meals will be handled promptly to limit gathering and practice social distancing.
A flyer is attached to this message with the information about the curbside meal pickup sites.

School bus meal distribution will also begin on Monday, March 23, with 20 buses delivering food across the city of Lubbock. Routes will begin at 12 p.m. and run until 1:30 p.m. in order of their regular stops. The bus numbers have not changed from their regular routes, so students who normally ride the bus will be familiar with the bus numbers. March 20, 2020: Online Learning Information-All Lubbock ISD Families

Dear Lubbock ISD families,

We are embarking on a new adventure in learning this week: remote instruction. While this is a new experience for all of us, please know we are working with teachers to plan the best and most high-quality experience possible. Fortunately, your child is quite familiar with online learning because it is utilized every day at school.

Beginning next week during the extended spring break, March 23-27, Lubbock ISD students will be offered a variety of optional learning experiences. Visit  www.LubbockISD.org/learnonline to find resources to keep student learning on track. When accessing this site, click on the parent tab and choose the grade level for learning appropriate resources for your student.

While your child is utilizing these resources next week, our teachers will be finalizing their plans for remote learning for their specific grade levels. Online school for all students will begin on Monday, March 30. Teachers will communicate what this will look like for your child. Students might log in at a particular time to video chat with their teacher, or be instructed to access one of the technology platforms to work more independently while the teacher monitors their work. Next week, Lubbock ISD will email instructions to students on how to access digital learning on the Chromebooks they brought home before spring break. These instructions will be specific with materials to help guide them through their work. There will also be a student help desk line available at (806) 219-0199 or helpdesk@LubbockISD.org should you or your child experience technical difficulties.

So, what does remote learning mean to you and your family? Second- through 12th-grade students have been provided Chromebooks and learning materials. Teachers will plan and assign lessons using different platforms. Our second- through 12th-grade teachers already utilize multiple platforms, such as Google Classroom and Google Hangouts, on a daily basis and our students are familiar with these tools. The vast majority of students will know how to navigate these platforms. For students receiving special services, more detailed information will be coming from your student’s special services teacher, your campus diagnostician and/or your speech and language pathologist.

For our students in pre-kindergarten through first grade, we will use a combination of technology such as SeeSaw, email, Class Dojo, etc., and provide learning packets. Students at these young ages benefit most from hands-on learning. Encourage your child to work on reading letters and sight words, practice handwriting, and counting items found in the home. These are great learning experiences that can be done anywhere. Teachers will share more ideas through digital communications with you. For those students who do not have home internet access, we are working to develop hard copy materials to support student learning. These will be available from the bus drivers who deliver food on eleven routes in the Lubbock ISD community or at a campus designated as a lunch pick up location. Information about our food distribution system is included in a separate email.

Families will receive log-on directions, sample calendars and help desk support beginning Thursday, March 26.

If your second- through 12th-grade student did not bring a Chromebook home over the break, families may pick up a Chromebook on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, March 25-27 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4 p.m.-6 p.m. Families may come to either Irons Middle School, 5214 79th St. or the Byron Martin Advanced Technology Center, 3201 Ave. Q.

Social distancing will be practiced at both locations. To protect our students and staff, please remain in your car and drive through to receive the device. Students must be present and bring their school ID and/or 10-digit 1000 number to receive a device.

Please note: students receiving services in Structured Learning Classroom (SLC) who did not take a Chromebook home before spring break, will have a Chromebook delivered directly to their home.

During these uncertain times, it’s important that we give each other grace. Children won’t learn as much if they are feeling stressed, so make sure your child takes breaks, cuddles, reads, does a puzzle, and takes walks. This is a new kind of learning for many, but it doesn’t have to be a challenging or negative experience. Make sure you communicate with your child’s teachers and ask questions. The Lubbock ISD staff and school community are working incredibly hard to ensure the safety of our students and meet their academic and social/emotional needs as well. Working together, we will get through this, and be stronger, wiser, and ready for whatever lies ahead.

March 19, 2020: COVID-19 Update Lubbock ISD Families

Good evening, Lubbock ISD families:

I know you are experiencing a multitude of anxieties right now about COVID-19 and the disruption to your family’s normal routines. I want to assure you that we will continue to serve your child’s educational needs during this time of uncertainty.

Earlier today, Governor Abbott ordered all schools in Texas to close through April 3. As a result, all Lubbock ISD campuses and administrative offices are closed. But, that doesn’t mean instruction will cease. We will send an email to all families on Friday, March 20, detailing our remote instruction curriculum that begins on Monday, March 30. If your second through 12th grader didn’t receive a Chromebook before spring break, that email will explain how and where to get one and how to exchange a Chromebook that is malfunctioning. It also will also explain how hard copies of the materials can be accessed, and includes information about learning materials for pre-K through first-grade students.

The Friday email will also provide information about food services that will be available beginning March 23rd. Aramark, our food service provider, will serve breakfast and lunch in a drive-through format on 16 campuses from noon to 1:30 each weekday. We’ll expand food distribution to a delivery service using school buses beginning the week of March 30.

Dear Lubbock ISD families,

As you deal with the unprecedented circumstances involving COVID-19 and the need for social distancing, the Lubbock ISD administration and staff are committed to providing academic services that are flexible in a healthy environment.

With counsel from the Board of Trustees, I have decided to extend spring break for students from March 23 through March 27. Classes will reconvene on Monday, March 30. We are taking this action in order to activate and train educators in our remote learning curriculum protocols, and as a result, staff is expected to report for normal duty on Monday, March 23.

We are sensitive to the concerns you have about sending your child to school during this outbreak, so beginning March 30, we are making attendance optional while this public health emergency is in place. You will not be penalized if you keep your child at home. We will require that you inform us of your decision and commit to remote learning, which we will provide.

The decision whether to close our schools after the extended spring break is still under consideration. At this time, there are no confirmed COVID-19 cases in Lubbock County. We know closing schools can adversely affect many families who struggle with childcare and rely on the schools for food services. We feel making attendance optional with no penalties for absences gives you the options you need to make a decision based on what is best for your situation and alleviate your concerns.

For those who decide to send their students to class, Lubbock ISD will institute social distancing practices. We will stagger cafeteria periods and class seating assignments to maintain a safe distance between students. Hand sanitizing stations will be prominently placed and frequent hand washing will be mandatory.

It is critical that students who exhibit symptoms of illness do not come to school. If your child is sick or a member of your household is sick, please do not send your child to school. School nurses will continue to actively monitor all student and staff health, and the student health policies are still in effect. If your child begins to exhibit symptoms of illness while at school, your child will be sent home.

Lubbock ISD administration advises families and staff to adhere to CDC guidelines regarding domestic and international travel. It is imperative that you notify us of travel taken outside of the region between March 13 and 29 via an electronic form that can be found at www.LubbockISD.org/healthupdates. Lubbock ISD will work with families and staff on a case-by-case basis.

We realize you have many questions. We will continue to finalize the details of remote learning and other school services that we regularly provide during this extended spring break period and will provide extensive details on Wednesday, March 25.

Today the Lubbock City Council called for an emergency council meeting to issue a Disaster Declaration and approved restrictions prohibiting public gatherings of 200 or more people. This restriction does not apply to school districts. The City of Lubbock also announced there are still no confirmed cases in or around the Lubbock area.

Frenship ISD, Lubbock ISD and Lubbock-Cooper ISD understand the COVID-19 situation is rapidly evolving, and our administrators continue to closely monitor the new developments. All three districts are in contact multiple times a day and are communicating with City of Lubbock officials, local healthcare authorities and state and federal agencies.

Lubbock ISD educators and administrators applaud Governor Abbott and the Texas Education Agency (TEA) for issuing a waiver on 2019-2020 STAAR testing for all school districts due to COVID-19.

We share the governor’s great concern about how this outbreak will impact our student’s academic growth. We are proactively planning for any eventuality in regards to possible school closures and are confident that our educators and service partners can provide the necessary resources for our students and families.

This waiver allows Lubbock ISD to focus on providing these resources during this unprecedented public health crisis.

Due to the evolving situation concerning the Coronavirus outbreak in the United States and Texas, the following guidelines should be utilized by Lubbock ISD staff when addressing concerns related to Coronavirus.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is responding to an outbreak of respiratory disease caused by COVID–19. This disease was first detected in Wuhan, in the Hubei province of China. CDC is following this rapidly evolving health situation. On January 31, 2020, the United States declared a public health emergency to help the healthcare community respond to COVID-19. Exposure to COVID-19 comes from travel to China or direct contact with someone who has COVID–19. Everyone can do their part to respond to this emerging public health threat. School and school district administrators should collaborate with state and local health departments to update emergency operations plans in the event of a pandemic.

- CDC recommends getting a flu vaccine, taking everyday preventive actions to help stop the spread of germs, and taking flu antivirals if
- Healthcare providers should keep a lookout for people who recently traveled from China and have a fever and respiratory
- If you are a healthcare provider caring for a COVID-19 patient or a public health responder, take care of yourself and follow recommended infection control
- Face masks should be utilized by those who display flu-like symptoms to help prevent the spread of the
- Face masks are not recommended for those who are symptom-free.
- If you have been in China or have been exposed to someone ill with COVID-19 in the last 14 days, you will be subjected to limitations to your movement and Please adhere to these limitations. Your cooperation is integral to the ongoing public health response to slow the spread of this virus. If you develop COVID-19 symptoms, contact your healthcare provider, and tell them about your symptoms and your travel or exposure to a COVID-19 patient.
For those who are ill with COVID-19, please follow CDC guidance on how to reduce the risk of spreading your illness to others.

- Family members should avoid touching their eyes, nose, and
- Teach and encourage family and children to cover coughs and sneezes with a
- Clean and disinfect surfaces or objects at home, especially if someone in the home is
- Avoid sharing and handling personal

- Continue to monitor any signs and symptoms that could be associated with
- Continue to monitor and report flu-like illnesses to the Health Department on a weekly basis.

Joint statement from Frenship ISD, Lubbock ISD and Lubbock-Cooper ISD regarding COVID-19

The top priority of Frenship ISD, Lubbock ISD, and Lubbock-Cooper ISD is providing a safe environment for our students, staff, and families. We understand there are health concerns over the recent outbreak of respiratory illness caused by the new coronavirus called COVID-19.

The Lubbock County districts are closely monitoring the situation and tracking information provided by local, state and national healthcare providers. Administrators are also in daily contact with community partners and state and national healthcare agencies.

Currently, there is no indication of an immediate threat to the Lubbock community. The City of Lubbock Health Department is responsible for verifying any confirmed cases.

No classes have been cancelled in the three districts. Classes will resume on March 23 after spring break unless otherwise mandated by the Texas Education Agency, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), or Texas Commissioner of Education. These decisions are based on emphasizing facts over fear and relying on credible sources for information.

While facilities are not being used during spring break, the three districts will heighten the level of cleaning at all campuses in preparation for the return of students and staff on March 23. We encourage families planning on traveling during the break to visit the CDC website for important information on traveling domestically and internationally.

March 13, 2020: COVID-19 Update Lubbock ISD Families and Staff
March 13, 2020

Lubbock ISD administrators are continuously monitoring developments about the coronavirus with national, state, and local health agencies and community partners to ensure all students, family, and staff members are safe and aware of rapidly changing information. Administrative meetings are scheduled during spring break.

Lubbock ISD advises families and staff to adhere to CDC guidelines regarding domestic and international travel. You must notify the district of travel plans to any affected areas within or outside of our 200-mile radius via an electronic form that can be found on the Lubbock ISD website at www.LubbockISD.org/healthupdates. It is important to understand this is a rapidly changing situation and self-quarantine may be necessary upon your return. Lubbock ISD will work with families and staff on a case-by-case basis.

Even though we do not anticipate an extended spring break at this time, we are preparing for all possibilities to minimize the disruption to learning caused by emergency school closures. Should the need arise, we will make those out-of-school days as educationally productive and engaging as possible. Lubbock ISD students in second through 12th grades have brought home a district-issued Chromebook and charger. Student responsibility to care for these devices is important:
- The Chromebook is to be used for educational purposes only. District monitoring of the devices will continue over spring break.
- Only Lubbock ISD students and staff are able to sign-on to the device. Do not share login information.
- The Chromebook and charger must be returned when school resumes. Failure to return the items will impact participation in academic opportunities.
If virtual instruction becomes necessary due to an extended closure, detailed information will be provided for families to best prepare students for learning success at home.

Dear Lubbock ISD families,

Lubbock ISD continues to closely monitor Coronavirus (COVID-19) updates through the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Texas Department of Health and Human Services, and the City of Lubbock Health Department. During the last week, there have been extensive conversations internally and with local health officials to determine the best way to keep our community safe both during and after spring break.

Beginning today, we are restricting all school-sanctioned travel for students and staff to a 200-mile radius from Lubbock and prohibiting all out-of-state travel through June 30, 2020. We will follow guidance from the University Interscholastic League for all athletic and fine arts competitions.

We know some of our families are planning to travel over the spring break holiday. Lubbock ISD advises families to adhere to CDC guidelines regarding domestic and international travel. It is important to notify the district of travel plans to any level 2 or 3 affected areas via an electronic form that can be found on the Lubbock ISD website at www.LubbockISD.org/healthupdates. The Texas Education Agency is working to determine procedures to address this public health situation and absences. Lubbock ISD will work with families on a case-by-case basis.

We are in the process of examining best practices for content delivery and developing contingencies should that be necessary. As a proactive measure, we are issuing Chromebooks to be taken home over the spring break holiday for all students in second through 12th grades. As the number of novel Coronavirus cases continues to increase, it’s important for us to be prepared for all possibilities, including an extended closure if mandated by the Texas Education Agency or the Centers for Disease Control.

During spring break, our maintenance staff will conduct a deep clean of all campuses which will include disinfecting classrooms and all surfaces. Please visit our website to follow updates and review resources. We ask that you continue to practice healthy behaviors and talk to your child about taking proactive measures.

Dear Lubbock ISD families,

Lubbock ISD has been closely following the media reports and information shared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Texas Department of State Health Services about the Coronavirus (COVID-19). While no cases have been suspected among our local community, please be assured we are monitoring the situation and will provide information as it becomes available from the public health authorities.

In the event a confirmed case occurs in our school community, we will notify staff and families through phone calls, emails, text messages, and the district's website and social media pages.

While a new type of illness can be scary, we can protect our students, teachers, and the broader community by using simple, everyday actions that protect people from various types of respiratory viruses. This is important not just to help prevent the spread of Coronavirus, but to help prevent the spread of other infections that can lead to student illness and absences.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your mouth and nose with the inside of your elbow when you cough or sneeze.
- Clean and disinfect frequently-touched objects and surfaces.
At this time, the district has not canceled student travel, but we will carefully consider all factors of this changing situation when making decisions related to the health safety of our students and staff. As we head into spring break, it is important for our families to take precautions when traveling. The CDC has provided guidance with a travel advisory found on their website.

Si bien un nuevo tipo de enfermedad puede dar miedo, podemos proteger a nuestros estudiantes, maestros y la comunidad en general mediante el uso de acciones simples y cotidianas que protegen a las personas de varios tipos de virus respiratorios. Esto es importante no solo para ayudar a prevenir la propagación del coronavirus, sino para ayudar a prevenir la propagación de otras infecciones que pueden provocar enfermedades y ausencias en los estudiantes.
- Lávese las manos con frecuencia con agua y jabón durante al menos 20 segundos. Si no hay agua y jabón disponibles, use un desinfectante para manos a base de alcohol.
- Evite tocarse los ojos, la nariz y la boca con las manos sin lavar.
- Evitar el contacto cercano con personas que están enfermas.
- Quédese en casa cuando esté enfermo.
- Cúbrase la boca y la nariz con el interior del codo cuando tosa o estornude.
- Limpie y desinfecte objetos y superficies que se tocan con frecuencia.
