Students and staff celebrated at Board of Trustees meeting

Lubbock ISD student-athletes and coaches were recognized at last Thursday’s board meeting for both athletic and academic accomplishments, including state cross country qualifiers, a 5A regional coach of the year, and an academic all-state award.

Nine Lubbock ISD student-athletes competed at the Texas High School Cross Country Championships in November. Top finishers include Monterey High School senior David Mora, who won the state championship in the 5A boys race and Lubbock High sophomore Reese Pena, who finished fourth in the 5A girls race. The Monterey boys team finished eighth overall.

The full list of cross-country state qualifiers includes Reese Pena and Bailey Springer from Lubbock High School, coached by Michael Sparks. The other state qualifiers are David Mora, Xavier Sanchez, Grayson Hastings, Bobby Stephens, Jacob Syma, Tripp Gray and Derek Sanchez from Monterey High School. They are coached by Crista Jones. Jones was also recognized as the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) 5A Regional Cross Country Coach of the Year in the inaugural group for cross country awards.

Monterey High School senior Maryn Noble was honored for being named to the THSCA Girls Volleyball Academic All-State First Team recognizing outstanding performance in the classroom. We’re so proud of these talented Lubbock ISD students!
