Supermarket Earth Day Events
H-E-B and United Supermarkets had events related to Earth Day last week. Both supermarkets have planned these community events to help train and prepare young students to be conscious of their earth-friendly habits, like recycling.
H-E-B has recycled 19 million pounds of plastic bags with their “How2Recycle” program, recycling them into their own Field and Future products. Each year they host their School Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge, which invites Texas schools to collect as many plastic bags as possible. Over 600 schools participated with Lubbock ISD having 10 of those schools who won for our region: REACH Academy, McCool MS, McWhorter ES, Lubbock HS, Wheelock ES, Smith ES, Overton ES, Hardwick ES, and Honey ES.
United Supermarkets hosted their Earth Day event with the help of some of our elementary students. Students from Roberts ES, Roscoe Wilson ES, Wolfforth ES, Nat Williams ES, Miller ES, Waters ES, Whiteside ES, McWhorter ES, and Hardwick ES were encouraged to decorate the bags with art inspired by the environmentally friendly holiday. On Earth Day, the United Family reminds guests that the simple act of using reusable bags instead of single-use plastic bags can make a big difference to the environment. This annual tradition has helped students not only be a part of a community-wide event but show firsthand how their actions of recycling can help inspire others to follow in their footsteps.
