Lubbock ISD is home to nine National Merit Semifinalists in the 68th annual National Merit Scholarship Program, released this month by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation officials. Of the approximate 1.6 million students taking the qualifying exam nationwide, these students are among the nationwide pool of semifinalists representing less than one percent of all U.S. high school seniors.

The National Merit Semifinalists are Kumaren Anand, Ruby Barenberg, Scott Sanford, Kyler Shu, Zhikai Tang, Anthony Wang, Helen Xie, and Max Zabriskie from Lubbock High School, and Lily Perry from the Talkington School for Young Women Leaders.

National Merit Semifinalists have the opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,250 National Merit Scholarships, worth approximately $28 million, offered next spring.

Lubbock ISD is also home to 24 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars and 4 National African American Recognition Program Scholars.
