The ATC Culinary Arts BBQ team earned a trip to state after competing in the Texas High School BBQ Competition last weekend. Led by ATC culinary instructor Chef David Gooch and sponsor Derrick Ramsey, the Lubbock ISD team placed ninth overall out of 20 teams, qualifying them for the state BBQ competition in Burnet, Texas later this year. They also received third-place brisket, fourth-place beans, seventh-place ribeye, and ninth-place ribs. As part of the event, students had the opportunity to tour the Texas Tech University Meat Sciences Lab. The team members are Roger Lightner and Brenden Smires from Coronado HS and Stephanie Easter and Cailynn Lopez from Lubbock HS. The event was hosted by the High School BBQ Cookers Association, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) educational organization linked here created to promote and sanction educational extracurricular cook offs while promoting and preserving BBQ and grilling education. Their goal is to enrich the lives of student chefs through BBQ clubs and cookoffs, promoting family values, life skills, character development, and leadership through educational events that provide scholarship opportunities. All revenue generated is reinvested into various CTE educational programs, cookoffs, and scholarships.
