We are aware of attempts to organize walkouts at several of our campuses this week. We want to ensure you are aware of the impact participating in a walkout may have on your students.
As always, our top concern is student safety – if a student leaves our campuses during the school day, we cannot guarantee their safety. Additionally, we have no control over external participants and their actions during a walkout, and students involved in activities that result in property damage, vandalism, public nuisance, etc., could face criminal charges or other consequences administered by local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.
Additionally, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) recently released guidelines for school districts related to walkouts. That memo can be found in its entirety here and includes rules our staff and district must follow.
Consequences outlined by the TEA for students, teachers and school districts can include but are not limited to the following:
Students must be marked with an unexcused absence and will also be in violation of the Lubbock ISD Student Code of Conduct that concerns leaving class without permission.
Teachers who facilitate walk outs will be subject to investigation and sanction including licensure revocation.
If you have any questions, please reach out to your campus principal.
