Our Astronauts at McCool Academy paid a special tribute to Commander McCool on what would have been his 64th birthday! To commemorate his incredible life and legacy, the student body released 64 balloons—one for each year he would have celebrated. 🎈

The launch was a reminder to astronauts to pursue their dreams and send their best wishes to the stars. ✨🌌

William C. "Willie" McCool was a U.S. Navy officer, aviator and NASA astronaut. Born on Sept. 23, 1961, in San Diego, California, he graduated from Lubbock's Coronado High School. He went on to study at the United States Naval Academy, graduating second in his class in 1983. He also earned master's degrees in computer science and aeronautical engineering.

Willie McCool had a distinguished career as a naval aviator and test pilot before being selected by NASA in 1996. He was the pilot of the Space Shuttle Columbia mission STS-107, which launched on Jan. 16, 2003. The 16-day mission was dedicated to science and research. McCool and the other six crew members tragically died on Feb. 1, 2003, when the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated upon re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, among other honors. #WeAreLubbockISD

We moved a house today! In fact, we moved two!

Our students at the Byron Martin Advanced Technology Center partner with Lubbock Habitat for Humanity each year to build homes for deserving families. The 24 and 25 houses finished by this program, built right on our back lot, are officially on the move and headed to their new neighborhood. There's nothing quite like seeing the hard work of our staff and students making its way down the street!

We are so proud of these students for their hard work and dedication to building up our community. A huge thank you to the Helen Jones Foundation and Lubbock Habitat for Humanity for their partnership in this incredible project.
