Happy New Year from Talkington School for Young Women Leaders! We look forward to a wonderful 2024!

Completing the FAFSA is essential for all high school seniors and current college students (who must fill it out each year of college to continue to receive aid). The form is available at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa
Here is what the Department of Education website says about the soft launch: "The 2024–25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form is available as part of our soft launch. During the soft launch, the FAFSA form will be available periodically while we monitor site performance and form functionality. We will have planned pauses for site maintenance and to make technical updates as needed to provide you with a better experience."
They will not be sending the information to colleges until later in January, so if you try to log in to complete the FAFSA and receive the "Planned Maintenance" warning, do not worry. It will eventually open for all of us. The website says the soft launch will take place over several days.
If you have any questions as you complete the FAFSA form, please reach out to our College Success Advisor at brandi.couch@lubbockisd.org.

Big thanks to our Lady Warriors and their families for their donations in December. We collected stuffed animals for Texas Boys and Girls Ranch, a variety of items for Hope Lodge, and over 80 pairs jeans for our FFA students' service project.

Calling all Talkington alumni! Are you trying to find scholarships? Do you want help finding internships this summer? Are you looking to serve as a mentor? If you need anything or want to help, please reach out to our College Success Advisor at Brandi.Couch@lubbockisd.org. She sends a monthly email to college students with scholarships and other helpful hints. She's working to find internships, and she hopes we can start a mentorship program--with your help, of course.

(silly pun alert!)
Working at Talkington is such a special gift. We are honored to be present for you all. While we have wrapped up a wonderful 2023, we look forward to an even more spectacular 2024.
Best wishes!

Camille Powell, 11th grade, shared some of her favorite memories from this fall. Share your favorite Talkington memories below!

Student Spotlight: Aria Perez, 6th grade
Aria had this to say about her friends at Talkington:
"My school day is usually fun because my friends are there. The best thing about them is they get me and I get them. We will have an amazing future, and I hope we’ll be together along the way."
Sisterhood is an important part of what makes Talkingon such a great place to be!

Student Spotlight: Natalie Conde, 9th grade
Reflecting on her friends in choir, Natalie said, "This fabulous group of girls and I share a bond that is unbreakable. Every moment I have spent with these girls has been memorable. There’s never a dull moment. They have brought so much joy, laughter, and support into my life. I love them so much, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for each and every one of them."

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Talkington Piano Program!

These amazing Lady Warriors, Allison Phillips and Kaelah Harris, have both advanced to State in the PTSA Reflections program. We are so proud! Kaelah has poetry moving forward in the high school contest. Allison has both a literary piece and photography moving forward in the middle school contest! Way to go, Warriors!

Winning Warriors!
We gave some prizes away to some lucky Warriors foday! Every day is a great day to be at Talkington.

The piano students are soooo close to their goal of 8,500 tickets! One and a half school days left to go. You can do it, ladies!

Literature comes alive in Mrs. Hamblin's 7th grade reading classes! Students performed scenes from The Picture of Dorian Gray, and as you can see from the smiles and the costumes, they really got into it. Students had 20 minutes to prepare their scenes, and it is absolutely amazing to see what they came up with in such a short time. Thank you, Mrs. Hamblin, for making learning fun, meaningful, and memorable.

The piano students have been hard at work earning tickets for the Piano Marvel Christmas Challenge fundraiser! We are well over halfway to our goal of 8,500 tickets. Keep it up, ladies!

We are looking for two science teachers for the spring semester. If you would like to work at the #1 school in LISD, please reach out to Aretha Cortez at 806-219-2200 or aretha.cortez@lubbockisd.org for the details.

Congratulations to our middle school spelling bee champions!
3rd place: Allison Phillips
2nd place: Charly Iaulualo
1st place: Obarita Aarushi
We are so proud of all 21 of our contestants! It took 34 rounds to declare a winner, and they had to spell some wild words!
Obarita will represent Talkington in the district bee next semester!

Our PTSA is the absolute BEST! Thank you for this delicious breakfast and the tree of gift cards! Such an amazing way to start the day. Thank you for all you do for our students and staff.
