Sixth grade families, all 6th graders are bringing home their choice sheets for 7th grade classes. Event Spotlight: Father-Daughter Dance
Allison Ward, 7th grader, shared this photo of her with her dad at last year's event. Allison said, "I really enjoyed spending time with my dad and having fun at the dance. This was by far my favorite thing that happened during my 6th grade year."
Middle schoolers are invited to bring a father figure to the dance on Saturday, February 10, from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Grand Central Venue. Tickets can be purchased from Mr. Mason for $20 (includes the Talkington student and her father figure), and you can add additional siblings for only $5. For questions about the event, please contact Mr. Mason at james.mason@lubbockisd.org.

Talkington Varsity won FIRST PLACE at the Texas Tech Law School Mock Trial Invitational! They went undefeated all three rounds and pulled a win against LHS.
Mia Butler and Treasure Kowino won overall Outstanding Witnesses and Noura Islam won Overall Outstanding Attorney. That means our Warriors won three of the four top awards given out!
Talkington JV won FOURTH PLACE, which is incredibly impressive considering this was their very first competition ever, and they competed against 2 strong varsity teams. We've never had that success at the JV level.
What amazing results! Please join us in congratulating our mock trial students and their advisor, Mr. Butler.
If you've never been to a mock trial event, you are definitely missing out. It is like a TV courtroom drama! Come see the Varsity team in Prelims on Monday-Wednesday, January 22-24. Semifinals are the following Monday, January 29, and Finals are Tuesday, January 30. You will need to be at the Lubbock County Courthouse before 5pm and they usually run until about 7:30. Well worth your time, believe me!

NOMINATE A DESERVING TALKINGTON TEACHER!
We know we have the best teachers on earth, all very worthy to win the Mrs. Baird's Teachers on the Rise award!
Nominating outstanding teachers for Teachers on the Rise is a fun and easy way for to show teachers the positive impression they've made on their students throughout the year. Quick tip: Be as detailed as possible and tell us how your favorite teacher goes above and beyond!

Happy New Year from Talkington School for Young Women Leaders! We look forward to a wonderful 2024!

Completing the FAFSA is essential for all high school seniors and current college students (who must fill it out each year of college to continue to receive aid). The form is available at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa
Here is what the Department of Education website says about the soft launch: "The 2024–25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form is available as part of our soft launch. During the soft launch, the FAFSA form will be available periodically while we monitor site performance and form functionality. We will have planned pauses for site maintenance and to make technical updates as needed to provide you with a better experience."
They will not be sending the information to colleges until later in January, so if you try to log in to complete the FAFSA and receive the "Planned Maintenance" warning, do not worry. It will eventually open for all of us. The website says the soft launch will take place over several days.
If you have any questions as you complete the FAFSA form, please reach out to our College Success Advisor at brandi.couch@lubbockisd.org.

Big thanks to our Lady Warriors and their families for their donations in December. We collected stuffed animals for Texas Boys and Girls Ranch, a variety of items for Hope Lodge, and over 80 pairs jeans for our FFA students' service project.
