We are thrilled to welcome our new Instructional Coach, Mrs. Alisha Lightbourne! Mrs. Lightbourne will be joining the Westerner family next year and has already been in the halls learning about Where Westerners Achieve More. -- A note from Mrs. Lightbourne: I am beyond excited to officially join the Westerner Family as the new Instructional Coach at Lubbock High School! I bring 8 years of teaching experience—six years at Dunbar and two years at Ervin Elementary—where I taught science in 5th, 6th, and 8th grades. Most recently, I completed a year as a Principal Fellow at Evans Middle School, which deepened my passion for leadership and student success. Lubbock High holds a special place in my heart—I’m a proud Westerner alum, and Mr. Young was actually my Alpha principal! It’s truly an honor to return home and serve in the school that helped shape who I am today. My husband, J. Lightbourne, works with Communities in Schools at Hutch, and we have three amazing kids—one attends Roscoe Wilson, another will be a future student there next year, and one is currently at Ervin Elementary. Outside of work, I love Jesus, spending time with my family, cooking, music, shopping, and traveling. I’m so grateful for this opportunity, and I look forward to working alongside the incredible staff, students, and families of Lubbock High. Let’s go BLACK and GOLD! -- Welcome Mrs. Lightbourne!

Congratulations to our phenomenal Lubbock High School Academic Decathlon team, who competed in Division 1 at Nationals this past week and brought home 9 individual awards. Academic Decathlon is the most academically elite program available to students, and every year, Lubbock High coaches seek out the greatest minds in Texas for the challenge. For Academic Decathlon, students study seven objective subjects centered on a different theme annually (this year: Our Changing Climate). Mastering Art, Economics, Literature, Math, Music, Science, Social Science is just the beginning for competitors. Students embarking on this journey also compete in three subjective events: Essay, Prepared Speech and Impromptu, and Interview. As robust and competitive as Lubbock High is, the team is just the third in Lubbock High history to qualify for this level of competition. How, you might ask, does such a phenomenon occur? In April of 2025, our Aca Deca juniors (returning seniors) said, “we’re going to Iowa.” Then freaking did it. Our 2024-25 team consists of Robert Gaines, Echo Ancell, Dania Alkul, Irene Liang, Madeline Weaver, Tola Grupke, Aubrie Alvarado, Michael Herrera, and Toby Tiner. They are coached by Thomas Reynolds, Erin Castle, and Nicholas Reeves. Please congratulate these students on their tremendous accomplishments, and best of luck to our graduating seniors: Aubrie Alvarado, Echo Ancell, Robert Gaines, Michael Herrera, Irene Liang, Toby Tiner, and Madeline Weaver. And a huge thank you, again, to our community for raising the funds necessary for us to compete.
